"Chiraq" as a Part of American Culture

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá kulturním fenoménem zvaným "Chiraq", který se vztahuje k městu Chicago. Nejprve je mapován ekonomický, sociální a politický vývoj města, který vytvořil podmínky pro vznik tohoto fenoménu. Dalším diskutovaným aspektem je hudební scéna města vycházející zejména z afroamerické kultury a její vývoj. Následně je představen samotný termín Chiraq a pozadí jeho vzniku. Identifikovány jsou paralely, které aspekty tohoto termínu spojují s historickým vývojem města a také ohlasy a reakce, které toto označení vyvolalo v rámci americké kultury.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the cultural phenomenon labeled “Chiraq” which originates from the city of Chicago. At first, the social, economic and political developments, that have contributed to the situation that the lable covers in the city, are discussed. Another aspect that is argued is the music industry in Chicago and its development which has been heavily influenced by the African American culture. Consequently, the term Chiraq and its background are introduced. Eventually, the parallels linking the historical developments of the city with the conditions Chiraq stands for are identified as well as the responses and resonances within the American culture.
