Film as Art? German contributions between aesthetics and sociology of art in the 1930s

Abstract:

Film již ve svých počátcích se stal tématem pro teoretiky z oblasti estetiky nebo sociologie. Nástup filmu rozpoutal diskuzi, zda představuje umění. Prvé filmy z produkce sourozenců Lumiérových vypadaly pouze jako dokumenty. Až později Georges Mélies změnil vzhled filmů, čím se stal inspirací pro další vývoj filmové produkce. O film se teoreticky opírali představitele sovětské montážní školy ale i mnoho německých teoretických autorů. Vybraný němečtí autoři Rudolf Arnheim, Erwin Panofsky a Walter Benjamin se ve 30. letech 20. století zabývali filmovou teorii z různých pohledů. Arnheim popisuje film z pohledu gestalt psychologie, všímá si na filmu podstatné rysy, které film odlišují od pouhé technické reprodukce. Pracuje s pěti diferenciačními prvky, které odlišují filmové zachycení od vnímané reality. Panofsky z pozice kunsthistorika upozorňuje, že film se postupně vyvinul z lidové zábavy. Benjamin z historického pohledu píše o nové situaci v umění, kdy se změnilo jeho vnímání. Píše o masovém umění podléhajícímu politickému diktátu. Film doprovází fenomén nástupu zvuku, který obzvlášť překážel Arnheimovy. On tvrdí, že se tím spojily dva odlišné výrazové prostředky, které společně působí disharmonicky. Panofsky píše o změně způsobu tvorby filmu a hereckého hraní v souvislosti se stylem, který srovnává s divadlem. Benjamin pracuje s procesem ztráty aury, které je přítomná pouze o originality a jedinečnosti díla, což se netýká filmu, který je kvůli komerčnímu využití neustále reprodukován.

Abstract:

From its very beginnings, film became a topic for theorists in the fields of aesthetics and sociology. The launching of film had sparked a discussion whether or not film is a form of art. The first films produced by Lumiere brothers resembled to documents. When Georges Mélies later changed the form of films, he became an inspiration for further development. Representatives of Soviet assembly schools, as well as many German theoretical authors, relied on film for their theories. Selected German authors Rudolf Arnheim, Erwin Panofsky and Walter Benjamin were interested in film theory from various perspectives in the 1930s. Arnheim analysed film from the point of view of gestalt psychology and noted typical features which distinguished film from more technical reproductions.He worked with five different elements that distinguish film resolution from perceived reality. Panofsky, from the position of an art historian, points out that film evolved from folk entertainment. From historical point of view, Benjamin writes about a new situation in art where his perception has changed. He writes about mass art subject to political overview. Film is accompanied by the onset of sound which bothered Arnheim. He claimed that these two powerful means of expression give the impression of disharmony when combined. Panofsky writes about interactive filmmaking and acting edges in connection with a style that he compares to theater. Benjamin also claimed that due to the constant reproductions in commercial use, films loose the aura of their originality and uniqueness.
