Do we really know how ICU patients feel?

Abstract:

Diplomová práce hodnotí vliv jednotlivých rušivých faktorů okolního prostředí jednotek intenzivní péče na zde hospitalizované pacienty. Na základě analýzy sesbíraných dat byly identifikovány hlavní stresory prostředí, kterými jsou zejména hluk, světlo a mikroklimatické podmínky. Ovlivněním těchto rušivých faktorů lze výrazným způsobem snížit diskomfort pacientů a zlepšit tím kvalitu jejich spánku. Práce je rozdělena do dvou částí, teoretické a empirické. V teoretické části práce jsou shrnuty základní principy a specifika JIP a dále je zde charakterizován spánek včetně důsledků jeho nedostatku i možností jeho ovlivnění. Empirická část byla založena na vyhodnocení kvantitativního dotazníkového šetření, jehož cílem bylo zhodnocení vnímání prostředí na JIP, a to samotnými pacienty i sestrami, které se o ně během jejich pobytu na JIP starají. Výsledky práce přináší ucelený pohled na tuto problematiku a navrhují možnosti řešení vedoucí ke snížení rušivých vlivu prostředí, a tím zkvalitnění tak potřebného spánku pacientů.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis evaluates influence of individual interfering factors of environment of intensive care units in hospitalized patients. Based on the collected data analysis, the main environmental stressors were identified, such as noise, light and microclimatic conditions. Affecting these disruptive factors, we can greatly reduce patients' discomfort and improve the quality of patients' sleep. The thesis is divided into two parts, theoretical and empirical. The theoretical part of the thesis summarizes the basic principles and specifics of the ICU and further characterizes the sleep, including the consequences of its lack and possibilities of its influence. The empirical part was based on the evaluation of a quantitative questionnaire survey aimed at assessing the perception of the environment at ICU by the patients themselves and nurses who are taking care of them during their stay at ICU. The results of this work provide a comprehensive view of this issue and propose solutions to reduce environmental disturbance, thereby improving patient sleep.
