Public perceptions regarding diverse services and the future prospects of urban agriculture in African cities

Abstract:

Urban agriculture (UA) is considered one of the key tools for sustainable urban development amid accelerating urbanization and increasing food security risks. In sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), UA is becoming increasingly important as a means of strengthening food independence, adapting to climate change, and promoting employment. The present study aims to identify the level of awareness, motivation, and involvement of various socio-economic groups in UA, as well as to analyze barriers to participation. Data were collected through an online survey conducted among students and graduates currently living or formerly residing in SSA cities. A total of 38 completed questionnaires were analyzed. Descriptive statistics, the Shapiro–Wilk test, Spearman’s rank correlation, and the Pearson chi-square test were used. The results showed that the level of involvement in UA significantly depends on age and income: older and middle-income respondents are the most active. Pronounced gender disparities and low youth participation were also revealed, underscoring the need for targeted support programs. The findings can serve as a foundation for more precise policies and educational initiatives aimed at advancing UA as a key component of sustainable urban food systems in SSA cities.
