Relationships between self-regulatory and coping strategies with the theory of time perspective during young adulthood

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo prozkoumat vzájemné vztahy mezi seberegulačními a copingovými strategiemi a dimenzemi časové perspektivy u osob v mladé dospělosti. V období mladé dospělosti je člověk konfrontován se světem dospělých, který na něj klade nové povinnosti a životní úkoly, které vyžadují plné zapojení seberegulačních i copingových strategií. Zvláště nás pak zajímalo, jak s výběrem seberegulačních a copingových strategií souvisí preference různých dimenzí časové perspektivy. Zaměřili jsme se na seberegulační strategie v Baltesově modelu selekce, optimalizace a kompenzace, které završují svůj diferenciační proces právě na počátku mladé dospělosti. Copingové strategie jsme zkoumali v Tobinově hierarchickém pojetí. Teoretický rámec časové perspektivy nám poskytla teorie Zimbarda a Boyda. Výzkumný soubor sestával z 252 respondentů a ze tří čtvrtin v něm převažovaly ženy (76,6 %). Výsledky ukázaly, že existuje vztah mezi preferencí určitých dimenzí časové perspektivy a uplatňováním specifických seberegulačních a copingových strategií u mladých dospělých. Nejtěsnější vztahy jsme nelezli u budoucí pozitivní perspektivy. Budoucí pozitivní časová perspektiva měla významný vztah se všemi seberegulačními strategiemi modelu SOC, které jsou považovány za adaptivní. Prokázal se také vztah mezi časovou perspektivou a copingem. Orientace mladých dospělých na budoucí a minulou negativní časovou perspektivu kladně souvisí s užíváním odklonových copingových strategií, zatímco negativně souvisí s užíváním příklonových na problém zaměřených strategií. Kromě těchto souvislostí jsme pozorovali také významné vztahy mezi seberegulačními a copingovými strategiemi a dále jsme zjišťovali, které seberegulační a copingové strategie mladí dospělí nejčastěji uplatňují. Závěry této korelační studie mohou přispět k porozumění vztahům mezi seberegulací, copingem a časovou perspektivou v mladé dospělosti. Dále umožňují identifikovat dimenze časové perspektivy, které souvisí s adaptivními způsoby seberegulace a zvládáním zátěžových situací v mladé dospělosti, a které je vhodné u mladých dospělých rozvíjet.

Abstract:

The aim of this work was to examine the relationships between self-regulatory and coping strategies and the dimensions of the time perspective in young adults. In the period of young adulthood, a person is confronted with an adult world that imposes new responsibilities and life tasks that require full engagement of self-regulatory and coping strategies. We were especially interested in how the preferences of different dimensions of the time perspective are related to the choice of self-regulatory and coping strategies. We focused on self-regulatory strategies in the Baltes' model of selection, optimization, and compensation. These self-regulatory strategies complete their differentiation process at the beginning of young adulthood. We examined coping strategies in Tobin's hierarchical approach. The theoretical framework of the time perspective was provided by the theory of Zimbardo and Boyd. The research sample consisted of 252 respondents. Women represented the majority (76,6 %). The results showed that there is a relationship between the preference of certain dimensions of the time perspective and the selection of specific self-regulatory and coping strategies in young adults. The closest relationships were found for the Future positive time perspective. Future positive time perspective had a significant relationship with all self-regulatory strategies of the SOC model. The relationship between time perspective and coping was also demonstrated. Young adults' orientation toward Future and Past negative time perspective was positively related to the use of avoidance coping strategies. On the other hand, Future negative and Past negative time perspectives are negatively related to the use of approach and problem-focused strategies. In addition, we also observed significant relationships between self-regulatory and coping strategies and further investigated which self-regulatory and coping strategies young adults most frequently use. The findings of this correlation study may contribute to our understanding of the relationships between self-regulation, coping, and time perspective in young adulthood. Furthermore, they allow to identify dimensions of time perspective that are related to adaptive ways of self-regulation and coping with stressful situations in young adulthood and that are appropriate to develop in young adults.
