Detection of Curvilinear Structures in Biomedical Images

Abstract:

Cílem práce byla implementace metody SBall pro detekci křivočarých struktur a následné experimentální vyhodnocení chování této metody nad biomedicínskými daty. SBall je založena na analýze kulovitých struktur, jež jsou tvořeny diferencemi druhého řádu a jsou základem pro výpočet tří různých deskriptorů, jejichž vzájemná kombinace udává míru pravděpodobnosti výskytu křivočaré struktury v daném místě obrazu. Kontrastní nezávislost metody je zajištěna pomocí difúzního indexu. Implementace byla napsána v jazyce Java a slouží jako plugin do programu Fiji. K pluginu byla zároveň vytvořena doprovodná dokumentace. Správnost a přesnost naší implementace jsme ověřili porovnáním výsledků s původní C++ implementací vytvořenou autory metody. Dále byla metoda SBall kvantitativně porovnána se dvěma podobnými přístupy na syntetických i reálných datech, což přineslo důležité poznatky o praktické použitelnosti jednotlivých metod.

Abstract:

The goal of the thesis is implementation of SBall method for detection of curvilinear structures and experimental evaluation of this method on the biomedical data. SBall is based on the analysis of the structure ball, a geometric construction representing second order differences, which are the basis for three various descriptors determining the final vesselness measure. Contrast invariation of the SBall method is ensured by contrast-invariant diffusivity index. Implementation of SBall method, written entirely in Java, is release as a plugin for Fiji. Accompanying documentation for the plugin was created. The correctness of our implementation was proved by comparing our implementation with original C++ implementation written by authors of SBall method. SBall method was also quantitavely compared with two similar methods on the real and synthetic input images, practical usability was discussed.
