Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá genderovým násilím proti domorodým ženám v Mexiku a Kanadě. Je rozdělena na dvě hlavní části, z nichž každá se zaměřuje na jednu příslušnou zemi. Obě části obsahují sociokulturní úvod do tématu a dva analyzované romány, které zobrazují genderové násilí vůči znevýhodněným ženám a další související problémy. Mexická část této práce obsahuje analýzu románů 2666 od Roberta Bolaña a Desert Blood: Juárez Murders od Alicie Gaspar de Alba. Kanadská část obsahuje analýzu románů Birdie od Tracey Lindberg a The Break od Kathereny Vermette. Cílem této práce je porovnat literární projevy genderového násilí vůči znevýhodněným ženám v Ciudad Juárez v Mexiku a proti domorodým ženám v Kanadě. Porovnáním čtyř různých románů napsaných autory s odlišným původem a rozličným stylem psaní, se práce snaží zjistit hlavní příčiny pokračování genderového koloniálního násilí v obou zemích. Dále tato práce zkoumá způsoby, jakými se tito autoři zabývají násilím, jaká další příbuzná témata reflektují ve svých románech a jaký efekt chtějí vyprodukovat svými odlišnými styly psaní. Analýza dospěla k závěru, že i přes odlišný původ a styly psaní se autoři shodují v popisu hlavní příčiny genderového násilí vůči znevýhodněným ženám, patriarchátu. Tyto romány také zvyšují povědomí o nedostatečně zastoupených otázkách a obsahují silný komentář společnosti.

Abstract:

This thesis addresses gender violence against Indigenous women in Mexico and Canada. As such, it is divided into two major parts, each focusing on one respective country. Each part contains socio-cultural introduction to the subject and two analysed novels that portray gender violence against marginalized women and other related issues. The Mexican part is represented by the novel 2666 by Roberto Bolaño and Desert Blood: Juárez Murders by Alicia Gaspar de Alba. The Canadian part presents the novels Birdie by Tracey Lindberg and The Break by Katherena Vermette. The goal of this thesis is to compare literary representations of gender violence against marginalized women in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico and against Aboriginal women in Canada. By comparing four different novels written by authors who come from different backgrounds and whose writing styles differ, the thesis seeks to determine the main causes for the continuance of gender colonial violence in both countries as seen by the authors. Moreover, the thesis explores the ways in which these authors address the violence, what other related topics they choose to portray in their novels and what effect they want to produce by their differing styles. The analysis concludes that despite their different backgrounds and writing styles, the authors coincide in the depiction of the main cause of gender violence against marginalized women—the patriarchy. All four novels raise awareness about under-represented issues and contain a strong social commentary.
