"Education changes destiny". Qualitative research on socialization of Chinese students

Abstract:

Tato magisterská diplomová práce se zaměřuje na témata čínského školství, životní zkušenost čínského studenta a jeho socializaci. Jedná se o kvalitativní výzkum, který proběhl v červnu v roce 2017 na Zhejiang University, tedy na jedné z prestižních čínských universit. Celkem sedm respondentů bylo ochotných sdílet své životní příběhy, zkušenosti, názory a postoje. Důvěryhodnost sebraných dat je zaručena blízkými vztahy mezi mnou a každým z respondentů. Jako nástroj pro zpracování dat jsem zvolila metody interpretativní fenomenologické analýzy (IPA), které výzkumníkovi umožňují zkoumat nejen samotné sociologické jevy, ale i významy, které respondent přikládá prožité zkušenosti. Ve středu výsledné analýzy stojí dobrý student jakožto sociální role, která do studentova života přináší různé normy, hodnoty, požadavky a nároky na její plnění. Velká část práce se věnuje motivaci studenta ke studiu, tedy jak motivaci přicházející zvnějšku (rodiče, škola), tak motivaci samotného studenta (osobní cíle a ambice). Nevyhnutelným tématem v oblasti vztahů studenta a vzdělání je i mediálně dobře známá problematika studijního tlaku, který je možné v této práci nahlédnout z perspektivy samotného studenta. Můj vlastní text je hustě proložen nepozměněnými úryvky z rozhovorů, čímž se ke čtenáři dostávají nejen mé interpretace rozhovorů, ale i autentické výpovědi čínského studenta.

Abstract:

This thesis explores topics related to Chinese schooling, live experience of Chinese student and his process of socialisation. It is a qualitative research which took place in June 2017 at Zhejiang University, one of the top universities of China. The seven respondents were willing to share their life stories, experience, opinions and attitudes. The credibility of collected data is guaranteed by close relationships between me and each of the respondents. I used methods of interpretative phenomenological analysis, which allows the explorer to analyse not only the sociological phenomenon, but also the importance of the experience as the respondent finds it. In the centre of the analysis stands a social role of a “good student”, which implies many norms, values, demands and difficulties. A large part of the thesis talks about a motivation of student towards studying, including the motivation coming from outside (family, school) and personal motivation (aims and ambitions) as well. Well known phenomenon in Asia, the academic pressure is an inevitable topic in this field and this thesis provides the reader an understanding of Chinese student’s perspective. The text is interlarded with excerpts of original interviews giving the reader not only my interpretation but also the authentic testimony of the Chinese student.
