The development of Belarus after 1989

Abstract:

Bělorusko se nachází v srdci Evropy a má dlouhou historii, která sahá až do 9. století. Během středověku se Bělorusko stalo součástí Kyjevské Rusi a později Litevského velkoknížectví. V roce 1795 bylo Bělorusko připojeno k Ruskému impériu a zůstalo součástí Ruska až do vzniku Sovětského svazu v roce 1917. V roce 1919 se Bělorusko stalo nezávislým státem, ale tuto nezávislost si udrželo jen krátkou dobu. V roce 1922 se stalo součástí Sovětského svazu a zůstalo jím až do rozpadu SSSR v roce 1991. Bělorusko se pak stalo nezávislým státem a začalo hledat novou cestu v nové realitě. Po rozpadu Sovětského svazu bylo Bělorusko vystaveno mnoha výzvám. Ekonomika byla v troskách a země se musela snažit najít nové partnery pro obchod a spolupráci. Prezident Alexandr Lukašenko, který se ujal moci v roce 1994, zavedl některá hospodářská opatření, která pomohla stabilizovat ekonomiku země. Nicméně, jeho režim byl často kritizován za porušování lidských práv a nedemokratické chování. V průběhu let se Bělorusko snažilo najít své místo ve světě. Zlepšilo své vztahy s Ruskem a hledalo nové partnery v zahraničí. Nicméně, poslední události, jako například kontroverzní prezidentské volby v roce 2020, vedly k výraznému nárůstu napětí a konfliktů s opozicí i s některými zahraničními partnery. Bělorusko je často uváděno jako příklad nedemokratického režimu, který drží moc v rukou jediné osoby a nedovoluje svobodné volby nebo svobodné projevy. Bělorusko tak může být studováno jako příklad non-demokratického režimu, který se snaží udržet kontrolu nad svými občany a potlačovat jakékoliv odchylky od oficiální linie.

Abstract:

Belarus, a landlocked country in Eastern Europe, has a rich and complex history that spans centuries. The first known human settlement in Belarus dates back to around 9th century. Throughout its history, Belarus has been ruled by various powers, including the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Russian Empire, and the Soviet Union. In 1991, Belarus declared independence from the Soviet Union and adopted a democratic constitution. However, the country's political development since then has been tumultuous, characterized by authoritarianism, suppression of opposition, and violations of human rights. Alexander Lukashenko, who has been in power since 1994, has been accused of rigging elections, suppressing opposition, and violating human rights. He has been dubbed "Europe's last dictator" by some Western media outlets. The Belarusian government has been criticized for its lack of transparency and accountability, as well as its suppression of political opposition. Belarus is considered by many to be a non-democratic regime. The recent protests that began in 2020 following the disputed presidential election have brought Belarus to the forefront of the international stage. The country's political crisis has garnered global attention, with many countries condemning the actions of the Lukashenko regime. Belarus is currently undergoing a period of political instability, with the future of the country's political system uncertain. However, it is clear that Belarus is facing significant challenges in its transition to democracy and the rule of law. In studying the non-democratic regimes, one could apply the authoritarianism model to the Belarusian government. The authoritarian regime in Belarus is characterized by the concentration of power in the hands of a single leader, suppression of opposition, and violations of human rights. The use of propaganda and state-controlled media to promote the government's agenda and suppress dissenting views is also a hallmark of this regime. By examining the historical and current context of Belarus, one can gain a deeper understanding of the dynamics at play in non-democratic regimes and the challenges of transitioning to a democratic system.
