Opcie sa v súčasnosti vo veľkej miere používajú ako investičný nástroj na svetových finančných trhoch. Pôvodne boli vyvinuté za účelom zabezpečenia budúcej ceny, prípadne na ochranu aktív pred rôznymi rizikami. Ich rozšírenie a obľúbenosť prispeli k tomu, že sa s nimi začalo viacej obchodovať ako s investičným nástrojom. Obchodovanie opčných kontraktov nie je jednoduché.
