Tolerance toward Immigrants among Czech Adolescents: The Effect of Out-group Trust, Right-wing Authoritarianism and General Political Tolerance

Abstract:

Tématem této bakalářské práce je tolerance k imigrantům, jak ji vnímají čeští adolescenti. Bakalářská práce využívá kvantitativní data z výzkumu „Psychologické aspekty politické participace adolescentů.“ Tolerance k imigrantům je v práci chápána jako podpora práv imigrantů, které jsou rozděleny na dvě dimenze – rovná práva a kulturní práva. Cílem práce je prozkoumat vliv meziskupinové důvěry, pravicového autoritářství a obecné politické tolerance na podporu rovných a kulturních práv imigrantů. Tolerance k imigrantům tvořila dvě odlišné dimenze, podporu rovných práv imigrantů a podporu kulturních práv imigrantů. Čeští adolescenti obecně ve velké míře podporovali rovná práva imigrantů, podpora kulturních práv imigrantů byla nižší. Meziskupinová důvěra byla nejsilnějším prediktorem pro obě dimenze tolerance k imigrantům. Pravicové autoritářství mělo pozitivní vliv na podporu rovných práv imigrantů, v rozporu s předchozí výzkumnou evidencí. Vztah obecné politické tolerance a podpory rovných práv imigrantů byl protichůdný z důvodu dvou faktorů obecné politické tolerance – podpory pořádku ve společnosti (indikátor nízké politické tolerance) a podpory obecných demokratických principů. Vliv autoritářství a obecné politické tolerance na podporu kulturních práv imigrantů byl slabý. Moderační efekt meziskupinové důvěry na vztah mezi autoritářstvím a obecnou politickou tolerancí na jedné straně a oběma dimenzemi tolerance k imigrantům na straně druhé byl slabý a v případě obecné politické tolerance protichůdný z důvodu dvou faktorů obecné politické tolerance.

Abstract:

The topic of this bachelor’s thesis is tolerance toward immigrants among Czech adolescents. The study quantitative uses data from “Psychological Aspects of Civic Participation of Adolescents” research. Tolerance toward immigrants is understood as support for rights of immigrants, which forms two dimensions – equal rights and cultural rights. The aim of this study is to examine effect of out-group trusts, right-wing authoritarianism and general political tolerance on support for equal and cultural rights of immigrants. Czech adolescents were generally broadly supportive for equal rights of immigrants, support for cultural rights was lower. Out-group trust was the strongest predictor of both dimensions of tolerance toward immigrants. Right-wing authoritarianism had positive effect on support for equal rights of immigrants, contrary to prior empirical evidence. Relationship between general political tolerance and support for equal rights of immigrants showed contradictory results because of two emerged factors of general political tolerance – support for societal order (indicator of low political tolerance) and support for general democratic principles. The effect of right-wing authoritarianism and general political tolerance on support for equal rights of immigrants was weak. Moderation effects of out-group trust on effect of right-wing authoritarianism and general political tolerance on both dimensions of tolerance toward immigrants was weak and in regarding general political tolerance contradictory because of two emerged factors of general political tolerance.
