Terror management theory: Mortality salience hypothesis testing

Abstract:

On the basis of Terror management theory (TMT), it was hypothesized that when mortality is made salient, individuals tend to have harsher judgments of others who violate society’s norms or decreased liking of out-group members, because of the symbolic threat posed by dissimilar others. TMT has been supported by a large number of empirical studies showing that mortality salience (MS) has increased younger adults’ defense of their cultural worldviews, but only few studies have investigated these processes in older adults. The aim of this study is to compare the mortality salience effect in population of older adults and young students. An experiment using a 2X2X2 factorial design and TMT procedures was carried out, with treatment (Mortality Salience, control), age (young, old) and gender (male, female) as between-subjects factors and judgment scores as the dependent variable. Specifically, it was hypothesized that younger individuals - who are made aware of death through a MS treatment will show greater defense of their cultural values compared to older individuals who experience MS treatment and also compared to both (younger and older), individuals who experience a control condition. In addition, it was hypothesized that the effect of the MS treatment will depend on the individual’s gender. Participants’ defense of their worldviews after experiencing MS or a control condition was assessed by their judgments of a set of moral transgressions, as well as their judgments of their relationship towards individuals from different social groups. Participants were recruited from the Masaryk University. Older participants were recruited from the University of Third Age and young students were recruited from a class. A total of 116 participants took part in our experiment (64 older adults, 52 students). Data did not support our main hypotheses, however we found age differences. Older adults tended to have harsher judgments than younger adults. In an attempt to explain the findings, age-related changes are discussed.

Abstract:

Na základe Terror management theory (TMT), sme predpokladali, že keď je jednotlivcom pripomenutá nevyhnutnosť ich smrti (Mortality Salience), inklinujú k prísnejšiemu hodnoteniu druhých, ktorí porušujú spoločenské normy alebo k menšiemu sympatizovaniu s členmi odlišnej skupiny, pretože odlišní druhí pre nich predstavujú symbolickú hrozbu. TMT bola podporená množstvom empirických štúdií, ktoré dokazujú, že Mortality Salience (MS) zvyšuje u mladších dospelých obranu ich kultúrneho pohľadu na svet, ale len málo štúdií skúmalo tieto procesy u starších dospelých. Cieľom tejto štúdie je porovnať MS efekt medzi populáciou starších dospelých a mladých študentov. V experimente sme použili faktoriálny dizajn 2x2x2 s medzi subjektovými faktormi: priradenie k podmienke (Mortality Salience, kontrolná skupina), vek (mladší, starší) a pohlavie (muži, ženy) a skóry z dvoch indikátorov obrany pohľadu na svet ako závislej premennej. Konkrétne sme predpokladali, že mladší jedinci, ktorí podstúpia MS indukciu, budú vykazovať väčšiu obranu kultúrneho pohľadu na svet v porovnaní so staršími jedincami v MS skupine, a tiež v porovnaní s dvomi vekovými kategóriami (mladší a starší), ktorí boli v kontrolnej skupine. Okrem toho bola vyslovená hypotéza, že efekt MS bude závisieť na pohlaví. Obrana pohľadu na svet u participantov, ktorí boli buď v MS skupine alebo kontrolnej skupine, bola zistená na základe ich hodnotenia morálnych priestupkov, a tiež hodnotenia ich vzťahu k členom z rôznych sociálnych skupín. Starší dospelí, boli poslucháči z Univerzity tretieho veku Masarykovej univerzity a mladí študenti boli oslovení skrz výuku. Celkovo sa nášho experimentu zúčastnilo 116 participantov (64 starších, 52 študentov). Výsledky nepodporili naše hlavné hypotézy, ale zistili sme vekové rozdiely. Starší dospelí inklinovali k prísnejšiemu hodnoteniu, než mladší dospelí. V snahe vysvetliť naše zistenia sú diskutované zmeny súvisiace s vekom.
