Humour in Emma Donoghue's Non-Historical Queer Fiction

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá analýzou humoru ve třech románech irské autorky Emmy Donoghue: Stir-fry, Landing a Hood. Práce definuje termíny „humor“ a „queer“ a klade si za cíl prozkoumat, jak queer identity postav ovlivňují humor užívaný v těchto knihách. Pro tyto účely bylo vyčleněno několik různých druhů humoru a na základě konkrétních příkladů z románů je humor analyzován v rámci příslušného příběhu. Podrobná analýza ukazuje, že Donoghue používá humor, který je ovlivněný aspekty identit postav, například jejich sexualitou.

Abstract:

This bachelor’s thesis is concerned with the analysis of humour in three novels – Stir-fry, Landing, and Hood – by the Irish author Emma Donoghue. It defines the core terms: humour and queer, and seeks to examine the way queerness influences the humour used within the three novels. Distinct categories of humour are established and concrete examples from the books are used to analyse the humour within the context of its narrative. This close analysis reveals that Donoghue uses humour that is influenced by aspects of the characters’ identities, such as their sexuality.
