Towards a New False Friends Dictionary

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá jevem známým jako „falešní přátelé“ (anglicky „false friends“) a kompilací slovníku falešných přátel. Cílem této práce je vytvořit podklady pro kompilaci přepracované verze knihy Zrádná slova v angličtině od Josefa Hladkého. Nejdříve je stanovena definice pojmu „false friends“ a tento pojem je porovnán s dalšími výrazy, které popisují podobné jevy; to se týká zejména termínu „false cognates“. Následuje pojednání o roztřídění falešných přátel, které obsahuje četné a podrobné příklady. Poté jsou představeny dva protichůdné postoje týkající se přístupu k falešným přátelům: pozitivní a negativní. Klíčová kapitola této práce se věnuje tvorbě slovníku falešných přátel. Celá tato kapitola slouží jako podrobná recenze knihy Zrádná slova v angličtině a současně obsahuje instrukce pro tvorbu slovníku falešných přátel.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with a phenomenon which is known as “false friends” and with the compilation of a false friends dictionary. The purpose of this thesis is to lay the groundwork for the compilation of a revised version of Zrádná slova v angličtině by Josef Hladký. Firstly, the concept of false friends is defined and the term is compared with other terms referring to similar phenomena, primarily that of false cognates. Following is the discussion of categorization of false friends, which employs extensive and detailed examples. Subsequently, two opposing approaches to the treatment of false friends are presented: positive and negative. The key chapter of this thesis is devoted to the creation of a false friends dictionary. The whole of this chapter both functions as a detailed review of Zrádná slova v angličtině and contains guidelines for the creation of a false friends dictionary.
