Roman villas in the Germania Superior Province

Abstract:

Římské villy jsou jedním nejvýraznějším dědictvím římské kultury na území bývalé provincie Germanie Superior. Prováděné výzkumy v Německu a Švýcarsku dokazují, že zde musíme počítat s římskou kulturou na vysoké úrovni, která byla přijata převážně místní aristokratickou vrstvou. Římské villy se podílely jak na romanizaci, tak i na ekonomickém růstu provincie. Význam vill spočívá i ve zvýšení úrovně bydlení, který se projevil hlavně v použití materiálu a jistým komfortem. V magisterské práci se zabývám přírodními podmínkami (klima, vegetace, fauna), které hrály důležitou roli při výběru místa pro založení venkovského sídla, jež bylo závislé i na blízkosti dálkových cest, které umožnily přepravu hospodářských produktů na odbytiště. V práci jsou uvedeny základní typy venkovských sídel a jejich hlavních budov, které jsou variovány také podle potřeb majitele. Zde nalezené fragmenty uměleckých předmětů a nástěnných maleb poukázují na luxus, který nebyl omezen jen na italskou půdu. Na závěr jsou uvedeny 4 konkrétní příklady villae rusticae v provincii Germanie Superior a nakonec srovnání s těmi na území provincie Pannonia.

Abstract:

Roman villas are one of the most important roman cultural legacy in the area of former Germania Superior. The surveys performed in Germany and Switzerland have proved that we have to count with highly developed culture, which was accepted mainly by local aristocratic society. Roman villas took part in romanization and also in the economical growth of the province. The importace of villas is in the improvement of life conditions, which showed itself in the usage of material and in a certain amount of comfort. Master’s thesis deals with natural conditions such as climate, flora and fauna, which were important factors of choosing a proper place to found a country residence. This was also dependent on the proximity of distance trade routes, which enabled transport of products to sales areas. Elemental types of country villas and their main buildings, which alternated due to owner’s needs, are listed in this thesis. Fragments of art objects and wall paintings found there show a luxury, which wasn’t limited only to the italian area. There are four concrete examples in province Germania Superior listed at the end of the thesis, which are compared to those in the area of province Pannonia.
