Knowledge Sharing Grid with Semantically Assisted Matchmaking of Services

Abstract:

The Grid community works on an infrastructure for sharing resources across organizational boundaries, which would be easy to use and provide a reasonable amount of security. A particularly interesting type of a resource is knowledge. While knowledge in full generality may be quite elusive, there is certainly a type of knowledge which can be captured and shared in the Grid. It is the type of human expert's knowledge, that can be expressed as algorithmizable assessing of available data and thus provided as data-processing services to others. Such knowledge is usually expressed by the domain expert as a mathematical formula, or a description of an algorithm, and natural language description of conditions that must be satisfied for this formula or algorithm to be applicable. Such description can be turned into a service accessible over a network, so that others can use it to process their data. If outputs of a service can be fed as inputs to another service, then the services can be chained into a workflow, that can be seen as a new composite service. But as the number of such expert services grows, finding appropriate services for one's data becomes difficult. There is a considerable research in the area of how to provide descriptions of services in a formal machine-processable way, so that machines can better help humans in service discovery and invocation. Such descriptions are called semantic descriptions. The research is done in the fields of Semantic Web Services and Semantic Grid, both using research in the field of Semantic Web. However, the current Semantic Web is based on representing knowledge using First Order Predicate Logic (with some ad hoc higher-order extensions), and that choice preselects the type of reasoning which can be done. The objective of the thesis is to provide an overview of the current state of the art in service oriented architecture, service oriented grid, semantic grid, and present my own work towards the vision of service oriented knowledge sharing grid with semantically assisted matchmaking of services.
