Specialized Texts: A Comparison of Translations by Medical Students and Trained Translators

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá srovnáním překladů odborných textů přeložených skupinou studentů medicíny a skupinou studentů nebo čerstvých absolventů oboru Překladatelství anglického jazyka na MU. Teoretická část se zabývá odborným překladem, možnostmi hodnocení kvality překladu a povahou práce překladatele. Praktická část sestává z analýz a hodnocení překladů tří různých textů zejména s ohledem na významovou, gramatickou a stylistickou správnost. Díky srovnání kvality a tendencí v překladech těchto dvou skupin je práce zdrojem informací a rad pro překlad lékařských odborných textů.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to compare translations of specialized texts produced by students of medicine and trained translators. The theoretical part focuses on specialized translation, assessing translation quality and the nature of the translator’s work. The practical part consists of the analyses and evaluation of translations of three different texts, especially with regard to the correctness of meaning, grammar, and stylistics. Based on the observed quality and group-specific tendencies, this thesis can serve as a source of information and advice on translating specialized medical texts.
