Spider Jerusalem and/or Hunter S. Thompson: Transmetropolitan as Gonzo?

Abstract:

This diploma thesis is, as the name suggests, trying to compare two important figures of the journalistic world. The first is the American writer and journalist Hunter S. Thompson, who became famous thanks to the idiosyncratic style of his writing, which is influenced by his rebellious nature, frequent use of recreational as well as hard drugs and the attempt to shock his audience, in other words the style of writing today known as gonzo. His counterpart is Thompson's spiritual successor, the investigative journalist of the future Spider Jerusalem, the main protagonist of the American cyberpunk comic series Transmetropolitan by the British author Warren Ellis. The main part of the thesis will present a comparison of personal traits of both journalists as well as a comparison of their style of writing in order to arrive at a conclusion regarding their similarity.

Tato diplomová práce se, jak název napovídá, snaží porovnat dvě důležité postavy novinářského světa. První z nich je americký spisovatel a novinář Hunter S. Thompson, který se proslavil svérázným způsobem vyjadřování při své tvorbě, ovlivněným jeho rebelskou povahou, častým užíváním rekreačních i tvrdších drog a snahou šokovat publikum, jinými slovy způsobem psaní, kterému se dnes říká gonzo. Na druhé straně pak stojí jeho duchovní nástupce, investigativní novinář budoucnosti Spider Jerusalem, hlavní představitel americké kyberpunkové komiksové série Transmetropolitan britského autora Warrena Ellise. Hlavní náplní práce bude porovnání jak typických povahových rysů obou novinářů, tak způsobu, jakým píšou, za účelem konečného zhodnocení jejich podobnosti.
