Relationship man and animal: Adolescents and their animal

Abstract:

Práce se zaměřuje na vztah adolescentních dívek k jejich zvířatům. Pokouší se popsat hlavní dimenze a projevy vztahu mezi člověkem a zvířetem. V teoretické části jsou popsány koncept zvířete jako partnera ve vztahu s člověkem, benefity soužití se zvířaty a specifické použití zvířat v psychologii – zooterapie. Dále jsou prezentovány poznatky o období adolecscence a on-line výzkumy. Cílem kvalitativní studie bylo prozkoumat oblast vztahů dospívajících s jejich zvířaty, jak se vztah projevuje, čím je charakteristicky, jak ho dívky vyjadřují. Použitými metodami jsou záměrný výběr respondentů a polostrukturovaný rozhovor. Výzkumu se zúčastnilo devět dívek ve veku 13-17 let a jejich zvířaty byli hlodavci, psi nebo kočky. Analýza dat byla inspirovaná metodou zakotvené teorie, použito bylo otevřené a axiální kódování. Z výsledků byl vytvořen návrh modelu interakce dimenzí vztahu adolescentních dívek a jejich domácích zvířat. V práci bylo zjištěno, že vztah člověka a zvířete ovlivňují kategorie kontaktu, sdílení, pocitů, péče, myšlenek a společných činností. Zvířecí společníci jsou přirovnáváni ke kamarádům nebo blízkým členům rodiny. V diskusi jsou výsledky srovnávány se zjištěními jiných autorů. Jsou nabídnuty další možné směry zkoumání v této oblasti.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on relationship of adolescent girls towards their pets. It tries to describe main dimensions and manifestations of relationship between human and animal. In the theoretical part the concept of the animal as a partner in relationship with human, benefits of coexistence with pets and specific animal used in psychology – zootherapy – are described. The period of adolescence and on-line researches are presented as well. The goal of the qualitative research was exploring sphere of relationships of adolescents with their pets, and how relationships manifested whereby they are characteristic on girls to express them. Used methods are the convenience sampling of respondents and the half structured interview. Nine respondents of age between 13-17 participated in the study, and their animals were gnawers, dogs or cats. The data analysis was inspired by the method of grounded theory, open and axial coding was used. From the results the proposition of a model of interaction by dimensions of relationship between adolescent girls and their pets is created. In the thesis it was discovered that categories of contact, sharing, feelings, care, thoughts and shared activities influence the relationship of human and animal. Companion animal is compared to friend or close member of family. In the discussion the results are compare to findings of other authors. Other research directions in this field are offered.
