The Motive of Lovers of Verona in the Czech Literature in 20th Century

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce Motiv veronských milenců v české literatuře 20. století pojednává o odlišných možnostech přístupu k jedné látce, konkrétně o různých zpracováních shakespearovského motivu milenců vyskytujících se v české literatuře 20. století. Práce ukazuje a porovnává rozdílné způsoby, jakými je možno pracovat s pretextem. K tomuto účelu je využito tří děl, a sice apokryfu Romeo a Julie, jehož autorem je Karel Čapek, novely Romeo, Julie a tma, pocházející z pera Jana Otčenáška, a sci-fi prózy Vladimíra Párala Romeo & Julie 2300. Po krátkém pojednání o Shakespearově tragédii Romeo a Julie se práce věnuje výše zmíněným textům. Díla jsou po seznámení s autory nejprve zasazena do kontextu jejich tvorby. Následně je u každého ze zvolených titulů provedena analýza z hlediska poetiky (charakteristika postav, architektonika, kompozice, motivy, titul, chronotop, narativní způsoby). Během tohoto procesu jsou u textů neustále zohledňovány jak rysy, jež odkazují na pretext, tak rovněž takové, které se od pretextu naopak odklánějí. Po zevrubné analýze děl přistupuje autorka práce k jejich komparaci, čímž předkládá variace přístupu vybraných českých autorů k světově proslulému tragickému motivu. Při procesu komparace jsou na zřeteli rovněž okolnosti doby vzniku děl či života jednotlivých autorů.

Abstract:

Bachelor thesis The Motive of Lovers of Verona in Czech Literature in 20th Century deals with the different options of attitude to one topic, especially with the diverse adaptations of the Shakespeare’s motive of lovers which occur in Czech literature in 20th century. The thesis shows and compares different ways how it can be handled with pretext. For this purpose there are used three writings. That is an apocrypha Romeo and Juliet by Karel Čapek, a novella Romeo, Juliet and darkness from the pen of Jan Otčenášek, and a sci-fi prose of Vladimír Páral Romeo & Juliet 2300. After a short essay on the Shakespeare’s tragedy Romeo and Juliet the thesis deals with above mentioned texts. The writings are after familiarization with the authors initially put into the context of their literary output. Subsequently there is, at everyone from the chosen titles, performed an analysis from the point of view of poetics (characters, architectonics, composition, motive, title, chronotope, narrative ways). During this process there are at the texts permanently taken into consideration as well features, which refer to pretext, as also those which the other way round deflect from pretext. After a detailed analysis of the writings approaches the author of the thesis to the comparison of them, thereby she presents variation of attitudes of the chosen Czech authors to the worldwide famous motive. During the process of comparison there are on regard also circumstances of an era of writings’ inception and of the authors’ lives.
