Journey as Reality and Metaphor in the Works of Jamaica Kincaid

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá významem literární tvorby při objevování a utváření vlastní identity. Tento proces je popisován na základě analýzy pěti knih současné karibsko-americké spisovatelky Jamaiky Kincaid. Konkrétně analyzuji román Annie John (1985), cestopisnou esej A Small Place (1988), román o dospívání Lucy (1990) , fiktivní semi-autobiografii The Autobiography of My Mother (1995) a (auto)biografii My Brother (1997). Kincaid se ve svých pracích věnuje otázkám identity a důležitosti vlastního místa a prostoru, stejně jako tématům jako jsou kolonialismus, život a smrt nebo exil. Tato práce nabízí komplexní přístup ke všem těmto faktorům, které utváří osobnost Jamaiky Kincaid. Hlavní důraz je však kladen na význam a vliv cesty, pohybu a místa, na jejichž základě můžeme sledovat proces sebepoznávání. Pomocí konceptu alterbiografie pozoruji, jak Jamaica Kincaid promítá svou osobnost do svých textů. Chronologická struktura práce odpovídá tomu, jak Kincaid stárne a postupně se smiřuje s vlastním já. Každá její práce představuje novou hrdinku, která se od předešlých postav liší, z čehož vyplývá, že Kincaid promítá své nové životní perspektivy do své literární tvorby. Chronologický rámec taképodporuje myšlenku, že cesta je metaforickým vyjádřením života a psychického zrání. Pohyb a cesta nejprve znamená spásu a svobodu, ve které spisovatelka nachází bezpečí. Ale stárnutí a cesta životem ji staví na začátek cesty nové, cesty ke svým kořenům a minulosti, kterou kdysi opustila. Odhodlaně se tedy vydává na cestu do niter svých zavrhnutých příbuzných, aby porozuměla nejen jim, ale také sobě. V důsledku toho v sobě přijímá část svého já, kterou se marně snažila vymazat. Z Jamaiky Kincaid se tedy stává opět nová osoba, která si plně uvědomuje komplexnost své identity.

Abstract:

This thesis examines the process of negotiating one’s identity through literary creation. To trace such process I analyze five works of contemporary Caribbean-American writer Jamaica Kincaid, namely a novel Annie John (1985), a travel essay A Small Place (1988), a coming-of-age novel Lucy (1990), a fictional semi-autobiography The Autobiography of My Mother (1995), and an (auto)biography My Brother (1997). Kincaid is widely acclaimed for works that to a large extent deal with the question of identity and one’s place in the world as well as issues such as colonialism, life and death, or exile. This thesis offers a complex approach to all these factors that constitute Kincaid’s self. The analysis of Kincaid’s texts focuses mainly on the significance of journey, mobility, and place as a means of forming one’s identity and maps the trajectory the author follows towards embracing her unique identity. By using the concept of alterbiography I explore to what extent Kincaid projects herself into her literary characters. Each of her texts introduces characters that are slightly different from each other. Thus I argue that the new life perspective of the author that she gains while being on a metaphorical journey of life is projected into the writing of her characters. The chronological pattern enables me to trace the journey as a metaphor for life and maturation. In the beginning, the real journey and mobility are perceived as salvation and freedom, where the author and her characters find safe place. However, the aging and the life journey of Kincaid make her undergo a journey back to her past and to the things and people she once abandoned. She sets out on a journey to the selves of these people and, as a result, a new Kincaid emerges. She becomes a transcultural being who accepts the troubling complexity of her self and thus is ready for a new journey, without a burden of unsolved issues.
