Reproductive biology and speciation mechanisms in Nothobranchius killifishes

Abstract:

V této literární rešerši pojednávám o biologii rodu Nothobranchius, speciaci, speciačních mechanismech a reprodukčně-izolační bariérách některých taxonů. Na závěr se pokouším diskutovat možnosti, výhody a nevýhody studia speciace u rodu Nothobranchius. Tento rod zahrnuje drobné, velmi pestře zbarvené anuální ryby savan východní Afriky. Ryby žijí ve velmi proměnlivém prostředí vysychavých vod, na které se musely adaptovat. Jejich adaptace spočívá v krátkém životě jedince, přerušovaném obdobími klidu, tzv. diapauzami, a v každodenním tření počínajícím dosažení pohlavní dospělosti.

Abstract:

This thesis provides a literature survey on biology of genus Nothobranchius and speciation, mechanisms of speciation and reproductive isolation in general. In discussion, I consider possibilities, advantages and disadvantages of the genus Nothobranchius for studies on speciation. This genus contains small, very colourful annual fish inhabiting savannah pools in east Africa. Fish live in very unstable environment of desiccating water bodies to which they had to adapt. Adaptation is realized by an extremely short lifespan with dormant stages, so called diapause, rapid maturation, and by daily spawning beginning since the onset of sexual maturity.
