The Cycle of paintings depicting legend of Saint Augustine in Třeboň

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je analyzovat po stránce ikonografické obrazový cyklus zachycující výjevy z legendy sv. Augustina, který se nachází v ambitu klášterního kostela sv. Jiljí v Třeboni. Na dvaceti sedmi obrazech jsou zde zachyceny nejen obvyklé výjevy ze života tohoto církevního otce, ale i posmrtné zázraky, jejichž obliba stoupala v období protireformace. Při vzniku třeboňského cyklu hrály důležitou roli grafické listy antverpského rytce Schelte a Bolswerta, které patrně byly v našem prostředí využívány i jinými umělci, jako například Janem Jiřím Heinschem.

Abstract:

The aim of this graduation theses is to analyse the cycle of paintings depicting legend of St. Augustine from an iconographic point of view. This cycle situated in the cloister of monastical church of St. Aegidius in Třeboň, represents in twenty-seven images not only common scenes from the life of this Church Father, but also post-mortal miracles whose vogue has grown up in the era of the counter-reformation. At the origin of the cycle from Třeboň prints of an antwerp engraver Schelte a Bolswert played an important role. These prints are likely to have been used by other artists in our milieu as well, like Jan Jiří Heinsch for example.
