Literary Depictions of Women in the Holocaust: Wendy Holden's Born Survivors

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem této diplomové práce je poukázat na unikátnost ženských zkušeností v prostředí holokaustu. Tato unikátnost je poté ilustrována na skutečných zážitcích žen, které přežili holocaust a jsou reprezentovány v knize od Wendy Holdenové: Odsúdení prežiť. První část dokazuje, proč je nezbytné zkoumat taky ženskou perspektivu, když se jedná o téma holokaustu. Druhá část diplomové práce je založena na komparativní analyse. Dva aspekty života jsou porovnány, první, zkušenosti žen ze všeobecného hlediska a druhým aspektem jsou zkušenosti žen z Holdenové knihy: Odsudení prežiť. Všechny životný zkušenosti jsou rozděleny do třech period–první perioda je ze života před deportací, pak následuje život v getách a posledně je porovnán život v koncentračních táborech. Porovnávaný je vždy všeobecní pohled na vybranou periodu se zkušenostmi žen z té stejné periody v Holdenové knize.

Abstract:

The main focus of this diploma thesis is to portray the uniqueness of female experience within the Holocaust. This uniqueness is then illustrated using real-life experiences of women who survived the Holocaust and are presented in Wendy Holden´s Born Survivors. The first part of the thesis tries to prove why the female perspective is necessary when observing the Holocaust. The second part of the thesis uses as the methodology of comparative analysis. Two aspects of experiences are compared, first, experiences of women in general and second, experiences of women in Wendy Holden´s book Born Survivors. These experiences are divided into three periods of women´s lives which are compared–the life prior to deportation, life in the ghettos, and life in the concentration camps in general and in Born Survivors.
