Phonemic Analysis of Connected Speech in English

Abstract:

Abstract This Bachelor Thesis deals with connected speech in English and aspects of connected speech at segmental level and supra-segmental level. The aim of the thesis is to analyse and compare five recordings of native speakers from the perspective of connected speech. Three of the recordings are non-authentic designed for the English textbooks and two are authentic available on the websites. It is predictable that rapid connected speech of authentic recordings differs from slow careful language of non-authentic recordings. The thesis consists of two parts, theoretical and practical. In the theoretical part the term connected speech is explained, aspects of connected speech are introduced and accompanied by examples. The aspects of connected speech are explored at both levels, segmental and supra-segmental. In the practical part there are five recordings which are analysed. There are transcriptions and phonemic transcriptions of these recordings and on the basis of our own phonemic analysis the aspects of connected speech are shown. The analysis is supported by graphical and percentage representation. In addition, the practical part contains a survey done among students of English at Czech primary schools. The objective of the research is to find out whether or not they use authentic materials during their English lessons. The results of the survey are transformed into graphs and further discussed.

Anotace Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá řečí spojitou v angličtině a aspekty řeči spojité v segmentální i supra-segmentální rovině. Cílem této práce je analyzovat a porovnat pět nahrávek rodilých mluvčí z hlediska řeči spojité. Tři nahrávky nejsou autentické a jsou vytvořeny k učebnicím angličtiny, dvě nahrávky jsou autentické a dostupné na webových stránkách. Dá se předpokládat, že se rychlá spojitá řeč autentických nahrávek liší od pomalého pečlivého jazyka neautentických nahrávek. Bakalářská práce se skládá ze dvou částí, teoretické a praktické. V teoretické části je vysvětlen pojem řeč spojitá, jsou prezentovány aspekty řeči spojité, které jsou doplněny příklady. Aspekty řeči spojité jsou zkoumány v obou rovinách, segmentální a supra-segmentální. V praktické části je analyzováno pět nahrávek. Součástí analýzy jsou přepisy a fonémické přepisy a na základě vlastní fonémické analýzy jsou ukázány aspekty spojité řeči. Analýza je vyjádřena také graficky a percentuálně. Praktická část navíc obsahuje anketu mezi studenty českých základních škol. Výzkum je zaměřen na to, zda studenti používají v hodinách angličtiny autentické nahrávky. Výsledky ankety jsou převedeny do grafu a dále diskutovány.
