Bibliolinker: Proposed solution for a module for aggregating records in the Knihovny.cz portal according to similarity

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá fungováním softwarového modulu Bibliolinker, určeného pro doporučování dokumentů na základě podobnosti uživatelům portálu Knihovny.cz. Cílem je analyzovat metadata ve formátu MARC 21 ze zdrojů zapojených do portálu a na základě nabytých poznatků stanovit postup pro porovnávání bibliografických záznamů za účelem tvorby dvouúrovňových shluků. První části práce se věnují teoretickému kontextu a rešerši odborných zdrojů k tématu. Následuje souhrn možností nástroje Správce zdrojů, pro nějž je Bibliolinker rozšiřujícím modulem, a popis principů fungování samotného Bibliolinkeru. Praktická část práce začíná analýzou bibliografických metadat, a to jednak z hlediska možností formátu MARC 21 a jednak s ohledem na využití jednotlivých metadatových prvků v záznamech institucí zapojených do portálu. Výsledky analýzy jsou poté využity k určení sady slučovacích klíčů a posloupnosti pravidel pro shlukování záznamů na základě porovnávání kombinací těchto klíčů.

Abstract:

This Master’s thesis deals with the functioning of the Bibliolinker software module, which is designed for recommending documents on the basis of similarity for users of the Knihovny.cz portal. The aim is to analyze metadata in the MARC 21 format from sources linked to the portal, and on the basis of the information obtained to determine the procedure for comparing bibliographic records for the purpose of creating two-level aggregations. The first part of the thesis is devoted to the theoretical context and to the literature search of specialized sources on the subject. This is followed by a summary of the possibilities of the Record Manager tool extended by the Bibliolinker module, and a description of the principles on which Bibliolinker itself functions. The practical part of the work begins with an analysis of bibliographic metadata, both from the point of view of the possibilities of the MARC 21 format and with a view to the use of individual metadata elements in the records of institutions linked to portal. The results of this analysis are then used to identify a set of merging keys as well as a sequence of rules for aggregating records on the basis of a comparison of the combinations of these keys.
