Biogeographical patterns of species assemblages in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

V této práci se zaměřuji na popis, numerickou kvantifikaci a mapování distribuce biologických společenstev České republiky. Hlavní pozornost věnuji fauně našeho území, především savcům, ptákům, plazům, obojživelníkům a okrajově motýlům. Kromě toho jsem se však zaměřil také na přírodní biotopy, které jsou představovány rostlinnými společenstvy a mohou tak, do určité míry, zastupovat flóru České republiky. Hlavní cíle této práce mohou být shrnuty do následujících čtyř témat, z nichž každé je představováno jedním publikovaným článkem či doposud nepublikovaným manuskriptem: 1)Přezkoumat jaké faktory ovlivňují složení společenstev vybraných skupin živočichů České republiky a jaká je jejich relativní významnost 2)Přezkoumat hlavní gradienty ve složení společenstev terestrických obratlovců a na základě odlišností těchto společenstev vymezit biogeografické regiony České republiky 3)Klasifikovat území České republiky na základě distribuce typů přírodních biotopů 4)Přezkoumat prostorovou kompaktnost biogeografických jednotek vymezených na základě klasifikační analýzy v různých prostorových měřítcích a v různých částech Evropy Pro dosažení těchto cílů, byla použita data z atlasů rozšíření druhů a z databáze národního mapování biotopů. Tato data byla analyzována souborem vícerozměrných statistických metod zahrnujících redundanční analýzu (RDA), Moran’s eigenvector maps (MEM), prostorově omezené shlukování a Mantelovu korelaci. První studie přinesla kvantitativní popis vztahů mezi environmentálními proměnnými a variabilitou ve druhovém složení společenstev živočichů. Výsledky ukázaly, že vyšší podobnost bližších společenstev může být, téměř u všech uvažovaných skupin živočichů, připsána především environmentálním faktorům. Typy přírodních biotopů byly lepšími prediktory společenstev živočichů než klimatické proměnné nebo typy krajinného pokryvu. Výsledky druhé studie ukázaly, že první gradient ve složení společenstev terestrických obratlovců České republiky velmi těsně koreluje s nadmořskou výškou a se související změnou klimatických a stanovištních podmínek, zatímco druhý gradient patrně souvisí se zeměpisnou délkou a související změnou stanovištních podmínek. V této studii bylo zároveň navrženo členění České republiky do pěti biogeografických regionů, které se vzájemně liší environmentálními podmínkami a geografickou polohou evropských areálů asociovaných druhů. Ve třetí studii bylo vypracováno členění České republiky založené na rozšíření typů přírodních biotopů definovaných rostlinnými společenstvy. Výsledky ukázaly, že členění české krajiny závisí hlavně na nadmořské výšce, klimatických faktorech a rozdílech mezi Českým masivem a Karpaty. Výsledky čtvrté, spíše metodické, studie ukázaly, že biogeografické jednotky odvozené pomocí shlukové analýzy v hrubším měřítku jsou prostorově více soudržné než ty odvozené v jemném měřítku, neboť jejich prostorová soudržnost úzce souvisí s těsností vztahu mezi obměnou společenstev a jejich vzdáleností. Míra prostorové soudržnosti byla geograficky specifická s latitudinálním trendem.

Abstract:

In this thesis, I focus on the description, numerical quantification and mapping of the biogeographical patterns of species assemblages across the Czech Republic. I focus primarily on animal assemblages but I pay significant attention also to (semi-)natural habitats defined based on plant communities. Main objectives of this thesis can be summarized into the following four topics, each represented by a single manuscript or paper already published: 1)To examine what factors underlie patterns observed in the composition of animal assemblages of the Czech Republic and what is their relative importance 2)To examine main gradients in the composition of animal assemblages and to delineate biogeographical regions of the Czech Republic, reflecting regional differences of these assemblages 3)To classify the territory of the Czech Republic according to the distribution of natural habitats 4)To explore the pattern of the spatial coherence of biogeographical classifications at different scales and in different areas in Europe In order to achieve these aims and to answer the questions raised, I used data from species distribution atlases and from the national habitat mapping project. These data were analysed by using a set of multivariate statistical methods including redundancy analysis (RDA), Moran’s eigenvector maps (MEM), spatially constrained clustering and Mantel correlation. The first study brought a quantitative description of relationships between the composition of animal assemblages and the environmental variables. It showed that, spatial patterns in the composition of assemblages of almost all the considered animal groups can be ascribed predominantly to variations in the environment. Natural habitats were at all times better predictors than climate or land-cover. Results of the second study showed that the main gradient in the composition of assemblages of native terrestrial vertebrates can be largely attributed to altitude and to the related change in climate and habitat composition, whereas the secondary gradient may be ascribed rather to latitude and to related habitat changes. I also proposed five regions of the country which significantly differ by environmental conditions and geographical position of species ranges in Europe. In the third study, I drafted the first statistical landscape classification of the Czech Republic based on the distribution of natural habitats defined in terms of plant communities. The separation of delineated landscape types and regions was primarily determined by altitude and related climatic factors, and by differences between the Bohemian Massif and the Carpathians. The fourth study examined the spatial coherence of clusters resulting from the classification analysis at different spatial scales and in different areas in Europe. It showed that classifications at broader scales are generally more spatially coherent than those derived at finer spatial scales due to the strength of distance decay of similarity in the species composition at different scales. The pattern of spatial coherence, was geographically specific with latitudinal trend.
