Myth in the Novel Snow Crash

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá analýzou mýtu v kyberpunkovém románu Sníh. Sníh má v rámci kyberpunkového hnutí zvláštní postavení. Právě toto dílo iniciovalo tzv. druhou vlnu kyberpunku. Hlavním cílem práce je identifikovat a následně analyzovat mýty vyskytující se v románu. Mýty jsou symbolické systémy, aplikuji proto metodu sémiotické analýzy. Teoretický rámec tvoří koncept mýtu Clauda Lévi-Strausse a Rolanda Barthese. Lévi-Strauss se zaměřuje na klasický mýtus v antropologickém diskurzu, Barthes představuje popkulturní mýtus. Jelikož se oba typy mýtu, „božský a hrdinský“ a popkulturní, v románu prolínají, pokusím se ukázat, v jakém jsou tu vztahu, jak se potkávají, případně jak pracují v rámci beletristického textu.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is dealing with the analysis of myth in cyberpunk novel Snow Crash. In the context of Cyberpunk Movement the novel Snow Crash has an unique position. Exactly, this novel initiated the second period of cyberpunk. The main goal of my thesis is to identify and analyse the myths which can be found in the novel. The myths are specific systems, that is why is used the method of semiotic analysis. The theoretical framework creates a concept of myth of Claude Lévi-Strausse and Roland Barthes. Lévi-Strauss focuses on a classical myth in anthropology discursus. Barthes introduces pop culture myth. Whereas, both types of myths - "theandric and heroic" and pop culture - amalgamate with in novel. My thesis shows the relationship between both myths, how they cross each other and work together in the context of belletristic text.
