Stress tests as a tool for the supervision of insurance companies

Abstract:

Tato práce bude sloužit k celkovému pochopení zátěžových testů pojišťoven, které jsou pravidelně uskutečňovány jednou za dva roky. Zároveň by práce měla pomoci úspěšně pochopit principy a důležitost regulace pojistného trhu. Diplomová práce zobrazuje průběh zátěžového testování a představuje jednotlivé instituce, které se na regulaci a dohledu podílejí. Součástí je modelový příklad zátěžového testu pro dvě pojišťovny, které působí na českém pojistném trhu. Pro testování jsou definovány dva základní scénáře. První scénář testuje odolnost při vzniku finanční krize a druhý v případě přírodní katastrofy. Příklad je sestaven na základě metody výpočtu rizikového kapitálu, jehož výsledky jsou následně obohaceny o popis čtyř základních přístupů pro zvýšení odolnosti pojišťoven. Na závěr jsou poskytnuty poznatky z oblasti dohledu, které byly získány během stáže v České národní bance.

Abstract:

This work will serve to provide an overall understanding of the stress tests of insurance companies, which are regularly carried out once every two years. At the same time, the work should help to successfully understand the principles and importance of insurance market regulation. The diploma thesis shows the course of stress testing and presents the individual institutions involved in regulation and supervision. It includes a model example of a stress test for two insurance companies that operate on the Czech insurance market. Two basic scenarios are defined for testing. The first scenario tests resilience in the event of a financial crisis and the second in the event of a natural disaster. The example is compiled on the basis of the risk capital calculation method, the results of which are subsequently enriched with a description of four basic approaches to increase the resilience of insurance companies. At the end, knowledge from the field of supervision, which were gained during internship at the Czech National Bank, is provided.
