Aesthetics of Shock and Melancholic Motifs in the movies of Tim Burton and Michel Gondry

Abstract:

The diploma work “Aesthetics of Shock and Melancholic Motifs in the movies of Tim Burton and Michel Gondry” deals with the conversion of the beauty in the world and the Czech aesthetics of the 20th century, when it came through the methodological and theoretical change and normative beauty ceased to be its primary goal. Then it provides explication of the term defamiliarisation from Viktor Shklovsky and its theories of Czech aestheticians of the 20th century. Based on their definitions, it analyzes chosen cinematographic works of Tim Burton and Michel Gondry with common motif of melancholy. The conclusion is dedicated to comparation of these authors in terms of highlighting the presence of defamiliarisation in their works in different forms, but with common motif of melancholy. The aim of this work is to capture the change in the perception of beauty in the field of aesthetics in the 20th century, understanding the theories relating to the term defamiliarisation and capture its impact on the aesthetic value of creation of Tim Burton and Michel Gondry.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca “Estetika šoku a motívy melanchólie vo filmoch Tima Burtona a Michela Gondryho” sa zaoberá premenou krásy vo svetovej a českej estetike 20. storočia, kedy prešla metodologickou aj teoretickou zmenou a normatívna krása prestala byť jej primárnym cieľom. Poskytuje explikáciu pojmu ozvláštnenie od Viktora Šklovského a jeho teórií od českých estetikov 20. storočia. Na základe ich definícií analyzuje vybrané filmové diela Tima Burtona a Michela Gondryho so spoločným motívom melanchólie. Záver je venovaný komparácii týchto autorov z hľadiska zdôraznenia prítomnosti ozvláštnenia v ich diele v odlišných formách, ale so spoločným motívom melanchólie. Cieľom práce je zachytiť zmenu vnímania krásy na poli estetiky v 20. storočí, pochopenie teórií týkajúcich sa pojmu ozvláštnenie a zachytenie jeho vplyvu na estetickú hodnotu tvorby Tima Burtona a Michela Gondryho.
