Analysis of the attitudes and behaviour of the Czech population towards climate change

Abstract:

The dissertation aims to map and analyse in detail the climate attitudes and behaviour of the Czech public. It is based on representative questionnaire surveys conducted in the Czech Republic. In the introductory chapter, the attitudes and behaviour of the Czech society regarding climate change are characterised, and their development over the last years is presented. The dissertation follows a research tradition that seeks to explore and describe relevant predictors of climate attitudes and behaviour at the individual level. The theoretical part of the thesis presents the theoretical background used in this research tradition and provides an overview of factors potentially influencing climate attitudes and behaviour. It summarises the existing knowledge on their influence on climate variables, based on a search of meta-analyses, review studies and analyses of international surveys. The empirical part of the thesis aims to identify and present the factors that most significantly influence the attitudes and behaviour of the Czech public in the field of climate change and to compare them with the findings of previous studies. The basis for its elaboration are data sets from two large-scale representative questionnaire surveys, Česká veřejnost a změna klimatu 2015 and České klima 2021. In each survey, predictors of ten selected climate variables were identified using regression analyses. The influence of sociodemographic variables on climate attitudes and behaviour is, with few exceptions, relatively weak and less consistent in the Czech Republic. As expected, there is a strong influence of environmental attitudes on most climate variables and also of basic climate attitudes on support for climate policies and pro-climate behaviour, which have not yet been explored in the context of Czech society. Compared to previous studies, several new potential predictors of climate variables were included in the regression analyses. The results show a positive effect of the amount of time that respondents spend in nature, media interest in the environment, the opinion that the Czech state should address problems that threaten the future, and a negative evaluation of the environment in the place of residence. On the contrary, the influence of a hedonistic attitude is significantly negative.

Abstract:

Zámerom dizertačnej práce je podrobne zmapovať a analyzovať klimatické postoje a správanie českej verejnosti. Podkladom pre jej spracovanie sú reprezentatívne dotazníkové šetrenia, ktoré boli v Českej republike doposiaľ realizované. V úvodnej kapitole sú charakterizované postoje a správanie českej spoločnosti týkajúce sa klimatickej zmeny a je predstavený ich vývoj v priebehu posledných rokov. Dizertačná práca nadväzuje na tradíciu výskumu, ktorá sa snaží preskúmať a popísať relevantné prediktory klimatických postojov a správania na individuálnej úrovni. Teoretická časť práce predstavuje teoretické východiská využívané v tejto výskumnej tradícii a prináša prehľad faktorov potenciálne ovplyvňujúcich klimatické postoje a správanie. Na základe realizovanej rešerše metaanalýz, prehľadových štúdií a analýz medzinárodných prieskumov sumarizuje doterajšie poznatky o ich vplyve na klimatické premenné. Cieľom empirickej časti práce je identifikovať a predstaviť faktory, ktoré najvýraznejšie ovplyvňujú postoje a správanie českej verejnosti v oblasti zmeny klímy a porovnať ich so závermi zahraničných štúdií. Podkladom pre jej spracovanie sú dátové súbory z dvoch rozsiahlych reprezentatívnych dotazníkových šetrení Česká veřejnost a změna klimatu 2015 a České klima 2021. Pomocou regresných analýz sú v každom výskume identifikované prediktory desiatich vybraných klimatických premenných. Vplyv sociodemografických premenných na klimatické postoje a správanie je v Českej republike, až na pár výnimiek, pomerne slabý a menej konzistentný. V súlade s očakávaniami sa prejavuje silný vplyv environmentálnych postojov na väčšinu klimatických premenných a taktiež základných klimatických postojov na podporu klimatických politík a proklimatické správanie, ktoré neboli doposiaľ v kontexte českej spoločnosti preskúmané. Oproti predošlým štúdiám bolo do regresných analýz zaradených niekoľko nových potenciálnych prediktorov klimatických premenných. Výsledky ukazujú pozitívny vplyv množstva času, ktoré respondenti trávia v prírode, mediálneho záujmu o tému životného prostredia, názoru, že český štát má riešiť problémy, ktoré hrozia v budúcnosti a záporného hodnotenia životného prostredia v mieste bydliska. Naopak výrazne negatívny je vplyv hedonistického postoja.
