Ethnography as a condensed description

Abstract:

Předmětem metodologicky zaměřené teoretické práce bude jedna z klíčových metod kvalitativního sociálního výzkumu, jakou je terénní etnografický výzkum. Lze jej považovat za specifický průnik kvalitativní sociologie a sociální a kulturní antropologie. V antropologii má tato metoda svůj původ, tam byla poprvé aplikována a popsána. Kromě původu etnografického přístupu k sociální realitě zde budou zohledněny historické a současné rozdíly a vzájemné přesahy mezi sociologickým a antropologickým výzkumem. Zaměření práce bude ohraničeno jednak Malinowského pojetím etnografie, Garfinkelovou entometodologií založenou na tzv. folk categories a tzv. obratem k jazyku v rámci popisu sociální reality, který je spojen s vydáním průlomové práce redigované Jamesem Cliffordem a Georgem E. Marcusem "Writing Culture. The Poetics and Politics of Ethnography" v roce 1986. Cílem zde bude odpovědět na otázku, co znamenal pro etnografickou metodu tento obrat a proč se v jeho důsledku dostal do hledáčku protagonistů etnografického terénního výzkumu kromě informátora také čtenář jakožto adresát reprezentací sociální reality. Bude zde zodpovězena otázka, proč získala relace mezi výzkumníkem a jeho čtenářem přinejmenším stejný význam jako relace mezi výzkumníkem a jeho informátorem. Autorovu tvůrčí roli, která nemusí být pro čtenáře na první pohled viditelná, zdůrazňuje Clifford Geertz, který definuje etnografii jakožto zhuštěný popis. Práce má za úkol určit vztah mezi zhuštěným popisem a etnografickým terénním výzkumem v sociálních vědách, definovat pojem zhuštěného popisu v historické (diachronní) a systematické (synchronní) perspektivě a na konkrétních příkladech ze sociologické literatury analyzovat klady a případné rezervy Geertzova pojetí etnografie.

Abstract:

The subject of the methodologically oriented theoretical work will be one of the key methods of qualitative social research, which is field ethnographic research. It can be considered as a specific intersection of qualitative sociology and social and cultural anthropology. This method has its origins in anthropology, where it was first applied and described. In addition to the origins of the ethnographic approach to social reality, the historical and contemporary differences and overlaps between sociological and anthropological research will be considered here. The focus of the thesis will be bounded by Malinowski's conception of ethnography, Garfinkel's entomethodology based on the so-called folk categories, and the so-called turn to language in describing social reality, which is associated with the publication of the groundbreaking work edited by James Clifford and George E. Marcus, "Writing Culture. The Poetics and Politics of Ethnography" in 1986. The aim here will be to answer the question of what this turn meant for the ethnographic method and why, as a result, the reader as the addressee of representations of social reality, in addition to the informant, came into the crosshairs of the protagonists of ethnographic fieldwork. The question of why the relation between the researcher and his reader has acquired at least the same significance as the relation between the researcher and his informant will be answered here. The author's creative role, which may not be apparent to the reader at first glance, is emphasized by Clifford Geertz, who defines ethnography as condensed description. This paper aims to determine the relationship between condensed description and ethnographic fieldwork in the social sciences, to define the concept of condensed description in historical (diachronic) and systematic (synchronic) perspectives, and to analyze the pros and possible reserves of Geertz's conception of ethnography using concrete examples from the sociological literature.
