Occupation: an Artist. Types of Support of Contemporary Young Art in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Magisterská diplomová práce „Povolání: umělec. Formy podpory současného mladého umění v ČR“ se zabývá mapováním forem podpory pro mladé vizuální umělce v kontextu současné české výtvarné scény a panujících poměrů v podpoře kultury obecně. Zvláštní pozornost je věnována fenoménu cen pro mladé umělce, dále pak rezidencím (tvůrčím pobytům) a pronájmu umění. Práce rozebírá rovněž koncept mladého umělce jakožto příslušníka kreativní třídy z pohledu možností, které mu takové určení přináší; přibližuje koncept Registru uměleckých výstupů, jež navrhuje systém evaluace uměleckých výkonů. Na jeho základě by vysoké umělecké školy, potažmo jejich studenti, měly v blízké budoucnosti získávat větší podporu ze státních zdrojů. V celé práci jsou postupně s probíranými formami podpory odhalována jejich slabá místa, která jsou reflektována v závěru práce společně s několika návrhy, jež by mohly vést k efektivnější pomoci mladým umělcům a umění obecně.

Abstract:

This Master’s Thesis called “Occupation: an Artist. Types of Support of Contemporary Young Art in the Czech Republic” focuses on mapping the forms of support for young visual artists in the context of contemporary Czech artistic scene and the prevalent conditions regarding cultural support in general. Special attention is paid to the phenomenon of presenting young artists with awards, as well as to fellowships (artistic scholarships) and hiring art. This thesis also examines the concept of a young artists a member of the creative class while considering the possibilities that such function brings; it clarifies the concept of the Register of Artistic Outputs, which suggests a system of evaluation of artistic performances. On the basis of this evaluation, artistic academies, along with their students, might be able to gain more support from national sources. Weak spots of the aforementioned types of support are mentioned continually throughout this entire work; the weak spots are reflected in the closing part of the thesis, along with several suggestions which could lead to improving the effectiveness of the support provided to young artists and art in general.
