Attachment to God and psychological well-being in seniors

Abstract:

Práce se zaměřuje na sledování souvislostí mezi citovou vazbou k Bohu, pozitivními vztahy s druhými, osobním růstem, smyslem života a vnímanou zátěží u věřících seniorů. Dotazníky vyplnilo 259 respondentů (34 % mužů) hlásících se k římskokatolickému vyznání a starších 60 let (M = 72,2; SD = 7,2). Výsledky ukazují, že existuje negativní vztah mezi třemi vybranými složkami psychického well-beingu a úzkostností i vyhýbavostí ve vztahu k Bohu. Za kontroly vlivu sociodemografických proměnných se projevila jako signifikantní prediktor vybraných složek psychického well-beingu jen vazbová úzkostnost ve vztahu k Bohu, vyhýbavost byla za těchto podmínek pouze prediktorem pozitivních vztahů s druhými. Dále bylo ověřováno, jestli síla vztahu mezi vyhýbavostí ve vztahu k Bohu a psychickým well-beingem závisí na míře vnímané zátěže. Ukázalo se, že běžná míra zátěže nemá na vztah vliv. Také se nepotvrdilo, že by citová vazba k Bohu více souvisela s psychickým well-beingem seniorů, kteří nežijí ve spokojeném manželském nebo partnerském vztahu. Práce rozšiřuje poznatkovou základnu pro psychologickou práci s lidmi, pro které tvoří vztah k Bohu významnou součást jejich života.

Abstract:

This study is focused on observing links between attachment to God, positive relationships with others, personal growth, purpose in life and perceived stress in religious seniors. 259 respondents (34 % men) belonging to the catholic church and older than 60 years (M = 72,2; SD = 7,2) filled out questionnaires. The results show, that negative correlation exists between three chosen components of psychological well-being and anxiety and avoidance in ones relationship with God. While controlling the influence of sociodemographic variables, only the attachment anxiety in relationship with God has proven as a significant predictor of chosen components of psychological well-being, under this conditions, avoidance was only a predictor of positive relationships with others. Furthermore, dependance of strength of correlation between avoidance in relationship with God and psychological well-being on degree of perceived stress was also investigated. The results have shown, that ordinary degree of stress has no effect on the relationship. Stronger correlation between attachment to God and psychological well-being of seniors, who are not living in satisfactory marriage or romantic relationship, was not confirmed either. This study expands knowledge base for psycho-logical work with people, for whom relationship with God is an important part of their life.
