Simulation of an Attack to Mobile Devices

Abstract:

Focus of our thesis is on the analysis of current threats based on using mobile devices. In the first part we define differences between mobile devices and personal computers. In the next chapters we are going to define most used mobile OS platforms like Android, iOS, Blackberry and Windows Phone. The new security threats come from specific use of mobile devices, data storage and use of services. We describe security mechanisms and threats of malware in Android, currently most used mobile OS. We define important terms in the field of mobile malware such as family, instance and options, which we use to introduce the trending attacks on Android OS. In the last part we have prepared virtual machines in environment of Cybernetic polygons to simulate selected attacks. Progress of simulated attack is defined like security scenario, which allows deeper understanding of harmful malware activity. To implement these scenarios, it was necessary to deploy custom virtual images of Android OS to KYPO infrastructure.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca sa zameriava na analýzu aktuálnych hrozieb vychádzajúcich z používania mobilných zariadení. V úvodnej časti definujeme rozdiely používania mobilných zariadení a osobných počítačov. Následne sú charakterizované najpoužívanejšie mobilné platformy ako OS Android, iOS, BlackBerry a Windows Phone. Zo špecifického spôsobu používania mobilných zariadení, ukladania dát a používania služieb vychádzajú nové bezpečnostné hrozby. Podrobne charakterizujeme bezpečnostné mechanizmy a hrozby mobilného malware na súčasne najpoužívanejšiu platformu Android. Definujeme dôležité pojmy z oblasti mobilného malwaru ako rodina, inštancia a varianty, ktoré využívame pri predstavení aktuálnych útokov na OS Android. V poslednej časti sú pripravené virtuálne stroje v prostredi Kybernetického polýgonu, ktorý umožnuje simulovať vybrané útoky. Priebeh simulovaného útoku je definovaný ako bezpečnostný scenár, ktorý umožňuje hlbšie pochopenie škodlivej činnosti malwaru. Na realizáciu scenárov bolo nutné nasadiť vlastné virtuálne obrazy OS Android do infraštruktúry KYPA.
