Dexterity of the Human Hand

Abstract:

The manual dexterity tests are used for assessing hand motor skills performance. I have focused my research on men practising martial arts due to repeated straining of the hands during the training and the use of gloves in these sport disciplines with a comparison of a control group of people not practising intensive sports activities. The aim of this research was to find out and evaluate possible differences in the hand dexterity between these two groups. Additionally, I wanted to find the relationships between relevant selected factors and the hand dexterity. I have selected the following factors: the use of gloves in sport, hand injuries, grip strength of both hands and the second to fourth digit ratio of hands as a predictor of prenatal testosterone level. The studied sample was composed of 50 martial arts fighters and 51 controls. For assessment of the motor hand dexterity performance I used Purdue Pegboard test (5 subtests) and the O’Connor dexterity test. The maximum handgrip strength, as expected, was on average higher in sportsmen than in the control group, which was statistically significant. The maximum handgrip strength, as the only factor, has positively correlated with the scores of the right-hand Purdue Pegboard test. The scores of all dexterity tests have shown better results in the sportsmen group. The statistical effect size was mostly within small and medium values of Cohen’s d (ranged from 0.2 to 0.5). However, due to the small sample size these results were not statistically significant. Except for the maximum handgrip strength as the indicator of fitness, the remaining factors did not indicate any effect on the manipulative dexterity test skills.

Abstract:

Manipulační testy se často používají k hodnocení motorických schopností rukou. Vzhledem k častému zatěžování rukou v bojových sportech a nošení rukavic během výkonu, se v této práci zkoumaly manipulační schopnosti aktivních sportovců bojových umění v porovnání s nesportovci. Cílem této práce bylo zjistit možné rozdíly v manipulačních schopnostech mezi aktivními sportovci bojových umění a nesportovci. Dalším cílem bylo zjistit vztah mezi vybranými faktory a výkonem účastníků v manipulačních testech. Vybrané faktory byly: používaní rukavic při sportu, zranění ruky, síla stisku ruky a 2D:4D poměr délky prstů jako ukazatel hladiny prenatálního testosteronu. Výzkumný vzorek zahrnoval skupinu sportovců (50 účastníků) a kontrolní skupinu nesportovců (51 účastníků). K hodnocení motorických schopností byl použit Purdue Pegboard test (složený z 5 testů) a O’Connor Dexterity test. Dle čekávání byl maximální stisk ruky v průměrné hodnotě vyšší u sportovců a tento rozdíl byl statisticky významný. Výsledky všech manipulačních testů ukazují na lepší motorické schopnosti sportovců. Z vybraných faktorů pouze maximální stisk ruky pozitivně koreloval s výsledky Purdue Pegboard testu pro pravou ruku. Výsledky manipulačních testů naznačují lepší motorické schopnosti u sportovců než u kontrolní skupiny. Tento statistický efekt byl převážně malý až střední (Cohenovo d kolem 0.2-0.5), avšak z důvodu velikosti vzorku nejsou tyto výsledky statisticky významné, kromě síly stisku ruky jako ukazatele fyzického stavu účastníka, nebyl prokázán.
