Aesthetic Universals and the Work of Akira Kurosawa

Abstract:

Hlavním tématem práce jsou estetické univerzálie a jejich postavení na poli současného estetického bádání. Předmětem první části je vymezení pojmu a stručný exkurz, který přiblíží jeho historii. Ve druhé části dochází k představení základních směrů, které se k problematice estetických univerzálií, tedy zejména k existenci a jejich podobě, vyjadřují. Těmito směry jsou evoluční estetika, eticismus, formalismus a strukturalismus. Je rozebrán rovněž vztah mezi univerzáliemi a aktuálními definicemi umění. Třetí část je potom aplikací zjištěných závěrů na konkrétní filmová díla japonského režiséra Akiry Kurosawy, která existenci estetických univerzálií svou celosvětovou rozšířeností a svými mezikulturními tématy dokládají.

Abstract:

The main topic of this BA thesis is aesthetic universals and their position at the grounds of contemporary aesthetic research. The subject of the first part is the definition of the term and a brief review that describes its history. The second part consists of an introduction of fundamental approaches that deal with the issue of aesthetic universals, especially with their existence and shape. These approaches are evolutionary aesthetics, ethicism, formalism and structuralism. The connection between universals and recent definitions of art is also described. The third part is an application of ascertained results to particular films of the Japanese director Akira Kurosawa. These substantiate the existence of aesthetic universals by their worldwide popularity and cross cultural topics.
