The Many Faces of Richard III: Dramatic Portrayals of the Elizabethan Era and Their Impact on Contemporary Perception

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se věnuje příběhu krále Richarda Třetího a třem jeho dramatickým zpracováním z alžbětinské doby. V první části se práce zabývá literárně historickým pozadím a terminologií problematiky a stručně také politickým kontextem vzniku těchto děl a jeho vlivem na obsah a zpracování. Další část práce se věnuje výhradně Richardovi Třetímu jakožto významné historické osobnosti a snaží se ověřit fakta týkající se několika stěžejních událostí Richardova života, zejména těch, jejichž dramatická zpracování působí velké kontroverze. Po srovnání dramatu a biografických informací je zřejmé, že daná dramatická zpracování jsou poměrně hodně politicky zaujatá proti Richardovi. Poslední část práce se pokouší komparativní analýzu daných třech divadelních her, se zvláštním zaměřením na Richarda a jeho interakce. Na závěr lze říci, že všechny tři díla líčí Richarda v negativním světle, ale Shakespearova verze, snad díky jeho vyjadřovacímu talentu, připouští možnost jiné, objektivnější, ne-li výslovně pozitivní interpretace.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the story of King Richard the Third and three of its dramatic portrayals from the Elizabethan period. First part deals with literary historical background and terminology and discusses briefly the political context of the plays and its influence on the content and dramatization. Second part of the thesis focuses solely on King Richard as an important historical figure and tries to find factual information on several important elements of his story, especially those, the dramatization of which has caused the most controversies. Based of the comparison of play and history book account, it seems that the dramatic pieces originating from Elizabethan period contain a lot of political bias in regards to Richard. The last part of the thesis offers a comparative analysis of the three chosen plays, with special focus on the character of Richard and his interactions. It can be said that all of the plays portray Richard a negative character, but Shakespeare’s version, thanks to his language capabilities, seems to allow greater possibility of a different, more objective, of not outright positive interpretation.
