What adolesecent in foster care understand by adulthood

Abstract:

Horní hranice adolescence je stále nejasnější a s prodlužováním profesní přípravy a oddalováním rodičovství se částečně vytrácí jasně definované přechodové události, které oddělují období dospívání a dospělost. Z tohoto důvodu se badatelé obrací na adolescenty s otázkou, co považují za dospělost. Nejčastějšími tématy, které se v této souvislosti objevují, jsou nezávislost, ekonomická nezávislost, vlastní rozhodování, ale také rodičovství. Některé výzkumy naznačují také souvislost mezi hodnocením momentální rodinné situace adolescenta a jeho představami o budoucnosti. Tato práce se zabývá představami adolescentů mezi 15-18 lety svěřených do pěstounské péče z důvodu selhání jednoho nebo obou rodičů. Metodou interpretativní fenomenologické analýzy jsou zkoumány polostrukturované rozhovory s dvěma chlapci (17 let, 15 let) a třemi dívkami (15 let, 15 let, 16 let) týkající se jejich představy o dospělosti. Cílem analýzy bylo zmapovat témata, která se v souvislosti s dospělostí u respondentů objeví a v druhém sledu nalézt případnou souvislost mezi jejich rodinnou situací a jejich pojetím dospělosti. Témata, která z analýzy vzešla, se víceméně nelišila od podobných výzkumů u běžné populace. Mezi tématy byla samostatnost, samostatné rozhodování, finanční nezávislost, nepotřeba pomoci, schopnost a ochota pomoci druhým, cílevědomost. V těchto tématech nebyla objevena významná souvislost se zkušeností dospívajícího se selháním rodiče, avšak při popisu nedospělosti respondenti odkazovali k původním rodičům, což by mohlo implikovat, že zkušenost dospívajícího s rodičovským selháním může mít formativní vliv na budoucí představy, především na představu tzv. nechtěného já.

Abstract:

The upper border age of adolescence has been becoming blurry in connection with prolonged period of education and postponing of parenthood there's nearly no clear distinction between adolescence and adulthood. For this reason researchers turn to adolescents with the question what they understand as adulthood. The most common features they name are independence, economic self-sufficiency, making own decisions and also parenthood. Some studies suggest a connection between the adolescents' evaluation of their current family situation and their ideas about future. This study focuses on what adolescents in foster care having experienced a failure of at least one of their parents in their parenting role understand by adulthood. Using semi-structured interview and the method of interpretative phenomenological analyses the interviews about adulthood with 2 boys (aged 15 and 17) and three girls (aged 15, 15 and 16) were taken under scrutiny. The aim of the analyses was to explore the topics that arose during the interviews and in the second step to find the possible connection between their family situation and their understanding of adulthood. The topics that were mentioned in the interviews do not differ in large extend from those identified in other similar studies with general public. Among the topics there were independence, independent decision making, no need for help, and the will and ability to help others and having direction or future goals. Within these topics no significant connection with the family situation of the respondents. But when describing immaturity in some cases the parents were mentioned. This could imply that the experience of failure of parents in their parenting role could have formative influence on perceived future prospects, mainly to an idea of so called undesired self.
