The struggle for hegemony in a bipolar system. Case study: the Peloponnesian War

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá na případě peloponéské války analýzou střetu hegemonického vyzyvatele s hegemonem v bipolárním mezinárodním systému. Práce se pomocí aplikace teorií mezinárodních vztahů a metody tzv. rovin analýzy zaměřuje na příčiny takového střetu, jeho vývoj a důsledky pro další trvání mezinárodního systému. Cílem práce je objasnit faktory, které rozhodly o výsledku války a analyzovat její dopad na stabilitu systému. V první kapitole jsou definovány hlavní teoretické pojmy související s principy jednání aktérů v mezinárodním systému. Druhá kapitola analyzuje fungování mezinárodního systému v období klasického Řecka a jeho hlavní aktéry, Athény a Spartu. Poslední kapitola aplikuje poznatky z obou předchozích kapitol na celou dobu existence mezinárodního systému s důrazem na peloponéskou válku. Práce využívá zahraniční odbornou i českou literaturu.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with the case of the Peloponnesian War to analyse the conflict between a hegemonic challenger and a hegemon in a bipolar international system. By applying international relations theories and the method of the so-called levels of analysis, the thesis focuses on the causes of such a conflict, its development and its consequences for the future of the international system. The thesis aims to clarify the factors that determined the outcome of the war and to analyse its impact on the stability of the system. The first chapter defines the main theoretical concepts related to the principles of actors' behaviour in the international system. The second chapter analyses the functioning of the international system in the period of classical Greece and its main actors, Athens and Sparta. The last chapter applies the findings of the two previous chapters to the entire period of the international system, with an emphasis on the Peloponnesian War. The thesis makes use of both foreign scientific and Czech literature.
