Archetypal motifs in the novel Sestra by Jáchym Topol

Abstract:

Diplomová práce „Archetypální motivy v Sestře Jáchyma Topola“ se zabývá interpretací románu Sestra (1994) současného českého básníka a prozaika Jáchyma Topola. Jako metoda byl zvolen přístup z hlediska teorie archetypů analytické psychologie C. G. Junga a jeho následovníků. Cílem práce je poskytnout touto cestou lepší porozumění poměrně složitému, nejednoznačnému a čtenářsky náročnému dílu, a to po stránce formy i obsahu. Takové porozumění může odkrýt další estetický rozměr díla a obohatit čtenářský prožitek. Po nezbytném výkladu konceptů analytické psychologie (archetyp, nevědomí, individuace, duševní dynamika) následuje popis formy a obsahu románu, zároveň doprovázený interpretací. V románu lze najít archetypální motivy stínu, persony, animy, moudrého starce, matky, hrdiny, dítěte, bytostného Já. Kromě těchto prvků se pak v rámci interpretace autor snaží postihnout i vztahy mezi těmito archetypy a podat jakýsi komplexnější výklad románu a jeho hlavních témat.

Abstract:

Diploma thesis „Archetypal motifs in the novel Sestra by Jáchym Topol“ deals with interpretation of a novel written by a contemporary Czech poet and novelist Jáchym Topol (the novel was translated in English as City Sister Silver by Alex Zucker in 2000). The analytical psychology of C. G. Jung and his followers, particularly the concept of “archetype” and its relation to the realm of fiction literature, was chosen as a method for interpretation. The aim of the thesis is to provide better understanding of this quite complex, ambiguous, even chaotic work of art with respect to both style and content. Such understanding may reveal another aesthetic dimension and enhance readers´ experience. Archetypal motifs like shadow, persona, anima/animus, wise old man, mother, hero, child, and the Self can be found in the novel. In addition to these features, the author of the thesis aims to cover as well as the relationships between the archetypal motifs and offer somehow more comprehensive description of the main themes.
