Gender equality in organization: Gender audit of an insurance company

Abstract:

Jak výstižně uvádí Joan Acker, gender je základním prvkem v logice organizací. K Acker se přidává celá řada současných vědců, kteří upozorňují na nutnost pojímat organizace jako genderované systémy, v nichž hrají významnou úlohu vztahy mezi ženami a muži a genderové stereotypy, které mezi nimi běžně fungují a jsou tak v organizacích reprodukovány. Tento mechanismus vyúsťuje v projevy genderových nerovností, které jsou nežádoucí a jež je třeba vymýtit. Jedním z nástrojů, který slouží k identifikaci dobrých a špatných zvyklostí v činnosti a projevech organizace, je genderový audit. Tato práce demonstruje, jakým způsobem je možno přistoupit k provedení genderového auditu v konkrétní organizaci – zdravotní pojišťovně. Odhaluje nízkou úroveň genderové citlivosti organizace spojenou s její genderovou slepotou a s tím spojené nežádoucí praktiky. Nabízí soubor doporučení k odstranění zjištěných nedostatků a zavedení příznivých vzorců jednání organizace.

Abstract:

According to Joan Acker’s incisive insights, gender is the fundamental element in logic organizations function by. Acker and many other scholars have argued that organizations need to be understood as gendered systems in which interactions between women and men, especially the ones institutionally reproducing gender stereotypes, must be examined. Indeed, such mechanisms result in manifestations of gender inequalities which are undesirable and must be eradicated. One of the instruments through which favourable and unfavourable habits in practices and behaviour of organisations can be identified is a gender audit. The presented thesis demonstrates the ways in which one can conduct gender audit in the context of a specific organisation, namely a health insurer. In concrete terms, it reveals low-level gender sensitivity of this organisation, linking it to its gender blindness and associated negative practices. What follows is the presentation of recommendations aimed at elimination of previously found deficiencies, including the introduction of suitable patterns of organizational behaviour
