The effect of mood on the consistency between prejudice and prejudiced behavior

Abstract:

Tato výzkumná práce se zabývala konzistencí mezi předsudky a předsudečným chováním, efektem nálady na předsudečné chování a efektem nálady na konzistenci mezi předsudky a předsudečným chováním. Práce se zaměřila předsudky vůči muslimům. Výzkumu se zúčastnilo 92 účastníků ve věku od 15 do 49 let. Průměrný věk byl 23,04 (SD = 7,76). Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 59 žen a 33 mužů. Míra předsudků vůči musli-mům byla měřena pomocí škály anti-arabských předsudků. Poté byli účastníci náhodně rozděleni do dvou experimentálních skupin. Pomocí videa pak u jedné byla vyvolána smutná nálada a u druhé veselá. Na závěr se měřilo předsudečné chování pomocí odeslání fiktivního e-mailu vyjadřujícího protest proti mus-limům v České republice. Výsledky výzkumu odhalily, že existuje signifikantní a silný vztah mezi mírou předsudků a následným předsudečným chováním, tento vztah však není lineární. Ovšem efekt nálady nebyl nalezen ani vůči předsudečnému chování, ani vůči konzistenci mezi předsudky a předsudečným chováním. Výsledky tohoto výzkumu tak odporují většině dosavadních poznatků o efektu nálady. Ty se i přes proti-chůdnost podoby vlivu shodují, že nálada signifikantně ovlivňuje konzistenci mezi postojem (i jeho formami, například předsudky) a následným chováním.

Abstract:

The present paper was concerned with the prejudice-prejudiced behaviour consistency, mood effect on prejudiced behaviour and mood effect on prejudice-prejudiced behaviour consistency. The paper was focused on anti-Muslim prejudice. The study sample consisted of 92 respondents, whose ages ranged from 15 to 49 years. The average age of participants was 23,04 (SD = 7,76). The sample was comprised of 59 women and 33 men. The anti-Muslim prejudice degree was measured by the anti-Arab prejudice scale. Then the participants were randomly divided into two condition groups. Using a video, a sad mood was induced in the first group and a jovial mood was induced in the second one. At the end of the study the prejudiced behaviour was measured by sending a fake e-mail which was expressing objection to the Muslims in the Czech Republic. The study results revealed a significant and strong relation between the prejudice degree and the prejudiced behaviour although this relation was not linear. However there was no mood effect on the prejudiced behaviour, or on the prejudice-prejudiced behaviour consistency. The study results are inconsistent with the most of previous findings regarding the mood effect. Although the previous findings discovered opposing form of the mood effect, they coincided with the significant mood effect on attitude-behaviour consistency (and its forms, e.g. prejudice- behaviour consistency).
