Jean Cocteau and the Group of Six

Abstract:

This doctoral thesis is an interdisciplinary work. It employs results of studies both in Musicology and French literature towards an analysis of interaction between a group of composers, the so called Group of Six (Le Groupe des Six, Les Six), and the poet Jean Cocteau during the "Roaring Twenties". Les Six are conventionally thought of as a rather informal group of young independent composers (including Georges Auric, Louis Durey, Arthur Honegger, Darius Milhaud, Francis Poulenc and Germaine Tailleferre) whose coherence was due only to the common social milieu of its members. This work, however, dismisses such a simplified view, pointing to certain common aesthetic postulates firmly underlying the musical production of the Group's members. The fact that these postulates were explicitly enunciated in Cocteau's critical texts as well as in his other theoretical papers establishes firmly the Group's connection to Cocteau. On a more pro-active level, Cocteau invested a substantial effort to facilitate meetings and exchanges within the artistic avant-garde, with the explicite aim to ferment the inspirative interactions therein. Under his aegis, Les Six maintained extensive interactions not only with the new generation of interwar poets, but also outside the field of poetry with other avant-garde artists of the time. This work evaluates in more details the Cocteau's role as a "spiritual father", defender or inspirer of the Les Six, and his contribution to their aesthetic orientation based on the common artistic aspirations. The study focuses not only on the Cocteau's relationship to music, but (perhaps more importantly in the present context) also on the diversity of his talent in general, witnessed by the numerous successful results of his collaboration with musicians, painters and choreographers. More specifically, the Cocteau's impact on Les Six is obviated via an analysis of his poems, ballets and librettos set to music in the early Twenties, and of his critical reflections on art in general. The four main chapters of this thesis cover the following areas of interest: The first, introductory chapter presents an overview of the historical, social and aesthetic contexts of the relevant period. The second chapter is devoted to Jean Cocteau. It explores his family roots, literary inspiration and poetic creation. It also outlines the poet's relationship to other artists, especially musicians, and his ideas concerning music and modern arts in general. The third chapter focuses on Les Six. It follows its birth and evolution in the historical context. Furthermore, it describes the forms and compositional techniques of the Group's members and spells out their common aesthetic ideals. The fourth and key chapter of the work is integrative and analytical. It examines the history and reception of the works created in the context of Cocteau's collaboration with Les Six, as well as their thematic and formal aspects. It points to a number of general poetic and aesthetic concepts involved, which place the work of the Group on the extreme forefront of the avant-garde artistic movement of the time.

Výzkum práce je zaměřen na kritické studium hudby tzv. Pařížské šestky, ovlivněné dílem Jeana Cocteaua, a je tedy teoretickým vyústěním oblasti muzikologie a francouzské literatury, který umožňuje interdisciplinární přístup k tématu. Pařížská šestka je často mylně považována za pouhé přátelské seskupení mladých nezávislých skladatelů, avšak její hudební produkce se vyznačuje respektem k estetickým postulátům, popsaných v kritických textech a teoretických pracech Jeana Cocteaua. Členové Šestky se často inspirovali díly meziválečných básníků a udržovali vztahy s ostatními avantgardními umělci té doby a tyto interakce byly také významně podporované právě Jeanem Cocteauem. Práce se tedy snaží zhodnotit možný vliv Cocteaua jako "duchovního otce", inspirátora a organizátora Pařížské šestky položit si otázku, jakou měrou mohl J. Cocteau přispět k myšlenkovému sjednocení skupiny a ovlivnit její estetickou orientaci. Současně pak chce postihnout určitou méně probádanou polohu tohoto básníka, tj. jeho vztah k hudbě a konkrétní plody jeho spolupráce s hudebníky, prostudovat variabilitu Cocteauova nadání a jeho uplatnění ve společných projektech, které jsou jedinečnými příklady fúze různých druhů umění. Studiem těchto děl, analýzou jejich stránky formálně-tematické a zejména jejich aspektů estetických se práce pokouší prokázat, že často nešlo pouze o náhodné individuální počiny skupiny mladých přátel, ale že Pařížskou šestku spolu s Cocteauem lze považovat za legitimní seskupení s mnoha jasně definovanými společnými cíli a idejemi. První kapitola práce uvádí historický, sociální a estetický kontext daného období. Druhá část zkoumá rodinné kořeny, literární inspirace a poetickou tvorbu Jeana Cocteaua. Popisuje vztah básníka s dalšími umělci, především hudebníky, a prezentuje jeho kritické studie o hudbě a moderním umění obecně. Třetí kapitola zkoumá historický kontext vzniku a vývoje Pařížské šestky, charakterizuje také formy, kompoziční techniky a společné estetické ideály skupiny. Poslední, analytická část zkoumá historii, recepci, formální a tematickou stránku děl vytvořených ve spolupráci Jeana Cocteaua s Śestkou. Tím tedy umožní definici některých obecných estetických koncepcí, charakteristických pro většinu avantgardních uměleckých směrů meziválečného období.
