Phrasal Verbs and Their Equivalents in Academic Texts: A Corpus Study

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je analyzovat vlastnosti frázových sloves a jejich jednoslovných ekvivalentů v akademických textech obsažených v korpusu British Academic Written English (BAWE). Výzkum je zaměřen na frekvenci, kolokace, rozdělení v rámci typu textů a rodný jazyk autora. Je použito softwaru Sketch Engine, který umožňuje přístup k BAWE korpusu a vyhledávání lingvistikcých informací potřebných pro tuto práci. První část této práce se zabývá teorií frázových sloves a akademického jazyka. Frázová slovesa jsou definována a rozdělena na základě tranzitivity, typu částice, metaforického a idiomatického významu, kombinace částic a formality. Jsou vyzdviženy různé rysy akademického jazyka a popsány rozdíly mezi schopností plynule konverzovat a vyjadřovat se akademicky. Druhá část se zaměřuje na metodologii, výzkum a analýzu výsledků. Pět frázových sloves vybraných pro tuto práci je zkoumáno z pohledu významu, frekvence, kolokací, synonym a kontextuálních informací týkajících se jak textu, tak autora.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to analyze the behavior of phrasal verbs and their single-word equivalents in the academic texts found in the British Academic Written English Corpus. The research is focused on frequency, collocations, text type distribution and first language of the author. The Sketch Engine corpus access software is used for accessing the BAWE corpus and searching for the language data needed for this study. The first part of this thesis provides theoretical background on phrasal verbs and academic language. Phrasal verbs are defined and classified according to transitivity, particle type, metaphorical and idiomatic meaning, particle combination and association and formality. Various features of academic language are highlighted and a distinction is made between conversational fluency and academic proficiency. The second part focuses on methodology, research and analysis of results. The five phrasal verbs selected for this study are examined in terms of meaning, frequency, collocations, synonyms and both assignment-related and author-related contextual information.
