Teaching Grammar to Young Learners

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with teaching grammar to young learners. The theoretical part consists of four chapters. In the first chapter, the term ´young learner´ is explained, the targeted age group is described in details and the interrelation between young learners and the human developmental stages which learners are going through is shown. The second chapter deals with grammar, why it should be taught and what is it´s role in English language teaching. The various approaches to language teaching are described with focus on communicative language teaching and communicative competence, which is important in the context of teaching grammar. In the third chapter the different approaches to teaching grammar are characterized. The last chapter of the theoretical part concludes all the information concerning approaches to the teaching of grammar in relation to teaching young learners. The practical part is aimed at teaching grammar to young learners, which approaches are used while teaching and what are the teachers´ and students´ attitudes towards teaching and learning grammar.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá výukou gramatiky žáků mladšího školního věku. Teoretická část je složena ze čtyř kapitol. V první kapitole je definován pojem ´žák mladšího školního věku´ nejen ve vztahu k vývojové psychologii, ale též k dalším procesům, jimiž žák v této etapě povinné školní docházky prochází. Druhá kapitola je zaměřena na gramatiku. Jsou zde uvedeny důvody, proč by gramatika měla být vyučována. Je charakterizována její role ve výuce anglického jazyka. V této kapitole jsou rovněž popsány různé přístupy k výuce jazyků. Důraz je především kladen na komunikativní výuku jazyků a komunikativní kompetenci, která je velmi důležitá právě v souvislosti s výukou gramatiky. Ve třetí kapitole jsou popsány různé přístupy k výuce gramatiky. V poslední kapitole teoretické části jsou shrnuty důležité informace související s přístupy k výuce gramatiky ve vztahu k výuce žáků mladšího školního věku. Cílem praktické části je zjistit, jaké přístupy k výuce gramatiky jsou používány při výuce žáků mladšího školního věku a jaký je postoj nejen učitelů, ale i žáků k výuce gramatiky.
