Predictors of Depression in Czech and Slovak Transgender and Nonbinary People

Abstract:

Transgender a nebinární lidé jsou ve zvýšené míře vystaveni tzv. menšinovému stresu. Menšinový stres může mít negativní dopady na fyzické i duševní zdraví, včetně symptomů deprese. Míra depresivity je u transgender a nebinárních lidí ve srovnání s většinovou populací výrazně vyšší. Cílem této práce bylo prozkoumat vybrané prediktory a potenciální ochranné faktory depresivity, kterými byly: proximální procesy menšinového stresu, sociální podpora, partnerská spokojenost, vzdálenost od ideálu tranzice a genderová identita. Vzorek (N = 459) tvořili čeští a slovenští transgender a nebinární lidé v nějaké formě partnerského vztahu. Data byla sbírána v rámci projektu Queer zdraví: rizika a protektivní faktory duševního a tělesného well-beingu u sexuálních a genderových menšin. Výsledky vícenásobné hierarchické regrese naznačují, že sociální podpora, obavy z odmítnutí a vzdálenost od ideálu tranzice jsou významnými prediktory depresivity. U partnerské spokojenosti a genderové identity nebyl nalezen žádný vztah. Sociální podpora byla nejvýraznějším negativním prediktorem depresivity, proto by měla být rozvíjena v rodinných a přátelských vztazích, ale také na úrovni školských a pracovních organizací a v systémové a legislativní rovině. Výsledky práce mají další praktické implikace pro psychologickou i zdravotní péči o transgender a nebinární lidi.

Abstract:

Transgender and non-binary individuals are at an increased risk of experiencing minority stress. Minority stress can have negative impact on both physical and mental health, including depressive symptoms. The rate of depression is significantly higher in transgender and non-binary individuals compared to the general population. The aim of this study was to explore selected predictors and potential protective factors of depresive symptoms, including proximal processes of minority stress, social support, relationship satisfaction, distance from the transition ideal, and gender identity. The sample (N = 459) consisted of Czech and Slovak transgender and non-binary individuals in some form of a romantic relationship. Data were collected as part of the project Queer Healt: Risks and Protective factors of Psychological and Physical Well-being in Sexual and Gender Minorities. The results of multiple hierarchical regression suggest that social support, acceptance concerns, and distance from the transition ideal are significant predictors of depression. No relationship was found for partner satisfaction and gender identity. Social support was the most pronounced negative predictor of depressivity, emphasizing the importance of its development in family and friendship relationships, as well as at the educational and workplace levels and at the systemic and legislative levels. The findings of this study have further practical implications for psychological and health care for transgender and nonbinary individuals.
