The Portrayals and Uses of the Grotesque in the Works of H. P. Lovecraft

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis delves into the realm of Howard Phillips Lovecraft's weird fiction, aiming to analyse and explain authors usage of the grotesque within his short stories "The Rats in the Walls" and "The Call of Cthulhu". Lovecraft, often associated with weird fiction, prompts discussions regarding the classification of his work within the gothic genre due to the presence of certain thematic elements. Thus, this study seeks to discern the manifestations and significance of the grotesque in Lovecraft's narratives, examining motifs, sources, and various portrayals in alignment with each story's overarching themes. The theoretical part of this thesis encompasses an exploration of Lovecraft's personal life and the ideologies, which shaped his literary universe, with particular emphasis on his views regarding religion and race, as well as an exploration of the genres which his stories are often classified as, alongside an investigation of the literary device of the grotesque and its role in evoking visceral reactions and profound emotions in Lovecraft's readers. By focusing on two seminal works, namely "The Rats in the Walls" and "The Call of Cthulhu," this study dissects the grotesque imagery within each narrative and elucidates its thematic relevance. The practical part culminates in a comparative analysis, shedding light on the similarities and disparities between the chosen stories, thereby providing insights into Lovecraft's utilization of the grotesque.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá weird fiction tvorbou Howarda Philipse Lovecrafta a jejím cílem je analyzovat a vysvětlit autorovo použití grotesky v povídkách "Krysy ve zdech" a "Volání Cthulhu". Lovecraft, jež byl často spojován s žánrem weird fiction, vyvolává diskuse o zařazení jeho díla do gotického žánru kvůli přítomnosti určitých tematických prvků. Tato studie se proto snaží rozeznat projevy a významy groteskna v Lovecraftových povídkách, přičemž zkoumá motivy, zdroje a různá zobrazení v souladu se zastřešujícími tématy jednotlivých povídek. Teoretická část této práce je zaměřena na zkoumání Lovecraftova osobního života a ideologií, jež utvářely jeho literární vesmír, se zvláštním důrazem na jeho názory týkající se náboženství a rasy, a také zkoumání žánrů, do nichž jsou jeho povídky často zařazovány, spolu se zkoumáním grotesky jakožto literárního prostředku, a její role při vyvolávání niterních reakcí a hlubokých emocí u Lovecraftových čtenářů. Tato studie se zaměřuje na dvě stěžejní díla, konkrétně na "Krysy ve zdech" a "Volání Cthulhu", rozebírá groteskní obraznost v každé z povídek a objasňuje její tematickou relevanci. Praktická část je vyvrcholena komparativní analýzou, která vyobrazuje podobnosti a rozdíly mezi vybranými povídkami, čímž poskytuje vhled do Lovecraftova využití grotesky.
