Educational aspirations by place of residence

Abstract:

Českými i zahraničními výzkumy byl již mnohokrát zkoumán vliv rodinného zázemí a pohlaví na vzdělanostní aspirace dětí a dospívajících. Nicméně tyto výzkumy opomíjejí roli místa bydliště v utváření těchto aspirací. V mé práci s pomocí kvantitativní analýzy dat zkoumám to, zda se vzdělanostní aspirace liší v závislosti na kraji, okrese a velikosti obce, kde má jedinec místo bydliště. Tento vztah mezi vzdělanostními aspiracemi a místem bydliště zkoumám i s ohledem na vzdělání matky a pohlaví dítěte. Výsledky analýzy ukazují, že mezi místy bydliště, a to především mezi kraji můžeme nalézt významné rozdíly ve vzdělanostních aspiracích dětí a dospívajících. Tyto rozdíly nejde zcela vysvětlit rozdíly v úrovni vzdělání matek mezi kraji. Se zvyšující se velikostí obce se zvyšují vzdělanostní aspirace dětí a dospívajících, kdy tyto rozdíly mezi velikostmi obcí jde z větší části vysvětlit rozdíly v úrovni vzdělaní matek mezi velikostmi obcí. Mezi okresy, kde je státní nebo veřejná vysoká škola, a okresy, kde není státní nebo veřejná vysoká škola, nejsou téměř žádné rozdíly ve vysokoškolských aspiracích dětí a dospívajících. Rozdíly ve vzdělanostních aspiracích mezi chlapci a dívkami jde pouze z části vysvětlit úrovní vzdělání matek v daném místě bydliště. Výsledky analýzy celkově ukazují, že místo bydliště je důležitým faktorem při tvorbě vzdělanostních aspiracích dětí a dospívajících. Celkový počet znaků (s mezerami) je 89 970.

Abstract:

The influence of family background and gender on educational aspirations of children and adolescents has been examined many times by Czech and foreign studies. However, these studies neglect the role of place of residence in shaping these aspirations. In my thesis, I use quantitative data analysis to research whether educational aspirations differ depending on the region, district, and municipality size where an individual resides. I also examine this relationship between educational aspirations and place of residence with respect to the mother's education and the child's gender. The results of the analysis show that we can find significant differences in the educational aspirations of children and adolescents between places of residence, especially between regions. These differences cannot be fully explained by differences in the level of mothers' education between regions. As the municipality size increases, the educational aspirations of children and adolescents increase, and differences in the level of education of mothers between municipality sizes can largely explain these differences between municipality sizes. There are almost no differences in the educational aspirations of children and adolescents between districts with a state or public college and districts without a state or public college. Differences in educational aspirations between boys and girls can only partly be explained by the level of education of the mothers in the place of residence. Overall, the analysis results show that place of residence is an important factor in shaping the educational aspirations of children and adolescents.
