Space and Characters in Santa Lucia by Vilém Mrštík with Consideration on Contemporary Artistry Movements

Abstract:

Hlavním předmětem této práce je analýza románu Viléma Mrštíka Santa Lucia (1893) v kontextu dobových uměleckých směrů a jejich synkretismu. Interpretace literárního textu spočívá v komplexním pohledu na jeho prostor a postavy. Úvodní část práce se krátce zaměřuje na pozadí vzniku díla a informuje o tehdejších uměleckých směrech. Druhá část je věnována autorovi textu a jeho přístupu k těmto dobovým uměleckým metodám. Poukazuje na jeho pokrokové názory, ve kterých předběhl svou dobu o několik desetiletí. Nejrozsáhlejší třetí část prostřednictvím podrobného zkoumání prostoru a postav sleduje povahu symbolů a topoi, s nimiž se v textu pracuje, a v této souvislosti poukazuje na přítomnost dobových uměleckých -ismů. Dále si všímá klíčových míst románu. Zkoumá, jaké mají funkce a význam, respektive jakou roli v literárním textu ztvárňují. V příloze je nakonec konfrontováno literární dílo s dobovým výtvarným uměním.

Abstract:

The main topic of this work is the analysis of Vilem Mrštík’s novel Santa Lucia (1893) in the frame of the contemporary artistic movements and their pervasion. The interpretation concludes the general view at the characters and space. The first part briefly aims at the background of the novel as well as it informs about period artistic movements. The second part is dedicated to the writer and his personal aproach to the period artistic methods. It points also on his progressive estimations he outstripped the period by several decades. The widest third part is pointed at the detailed research of the characters and space of the novel and describes the symbols and “topois” used in the novel. It refers to the period artistic “-isms” as well. Further on it points at the crucial moments of the novel. It peruses their functions and importance in the novel. There is confrontated the literary work with the contemporary fine art in the enclosure.
